According to Goal, if the voting system used until 2009 (i.e. only the media votes) was still used, Ribery would have won by a large margin, a landslide. But it seems that the international captains and coaches do not share the sympathy. [source]

Why can't they just include the media's vote in too? So votes from the coach, captain & media would be considered. Ronaldo might still won though even if they did include the media's this year, but it would have been a much closer race. The media would definitely act as a buffer/checker; they watched different leagues week in & out, and are less likely to vote for (a teammate) and will provide a much fairer result.

Is the coach one ranked? Kloppo is 2nd at least (I hope). Shame none of BVB players made it to the FIFPro XI.

Also, Jogi apparently didn't vote

Ah I thought they killed the media's votes starting from 2010 and moved it to the European Player of the Year system.

Gotta like the Kazakhstan voters though

Maybe Sneijder would have won in 2010, maybe Cristiano would have won in 2012. But Ribery for sure in 2013.

I thought that the award had already been shortlisted to three candidates - Messi, Ribery, Ronaldo - some months ago, but this list shows voters selecting numerous other players as well.

I haven't been able to do a specific count, but it seems at first glance that Ribery's main votes came from outside Europe (if we exclude France and Belgium, which have a natural affinity with the player).

No, the votes are done on all original nominees. Then after everyone has voted and they would know the result they say that 3 people are in the running. But as such they don't take any more votes after that.
