IMO it should be 5.
The way the game is evolving ... with more running, pressing and physical contact the need for more subs is there.

Probably... was it in the Super Cup when we implemented the Time-Out once?

I'm all for increasing subs in extra time but not in regular time. Being able to sub a player back in should be allowed though.

That was like a 2 minute time out each half for a water break rather than a time-out as you would see in NBA or NFL for example. I believe it was a very hot summer that year

I think Neuer has been well behaved lately. :P

Do note starting in 2018 the four top leagues get automatic qualification spots for the CL. No more CL qualifiers for the fourth spots. One interesting question is if this relates to the 2017-18 season (which qualifies to the 18-19 stint) or the latter.

Seems like UEFA took a hard stance against those looking to create a separate Super League with automatic participation for historicaly rich clubs not necessarily doing so well as the idea was discarded. So was the intention to create a 'joker' spot using discrete criteria as well as a separate body controlled by both UEFA and the ECA to manage the CL.

I wonder what the statistic for teams from the top for leagues failing to get through their initial play-off is anyway. One would assume it's rather low, so it doesn't seem like a major cookie to me unless I'm missing something.

Was bored, did the maths myself. With a 5-year sample, of the 19 games involved (England got a bye in 2012-13), the top four teams won 14 of them. This keeping in mind that 3 of those defeats were against another top four league team (italians twice versus english and once versus germans), while the other two were an italian penalty defeat to Portugal (itself the fifth-sixth strongest league depending on the time) and the Gladbach defeat to Dynamo Kiev. So through dubious number magic (I think penalties are lottery enough not to affect the statistics in this case), I'd call the threat of a top four league team losing its playoff fixtures against a non-top four league team 6,25%.

when did i miss this and does it apply to all games now this season?

in the dfl supercup, the kick-off of both halves were played out by a single person (not two) from the centre.

This summer. The actual rule change says you can pass backwards (the two players were meant to circumvent the only forward passes restriction).

In the Euros the change was already in effect.

Funny part is, apparently someone forgot to do the numbers over at the ECA. It seems the clubs' proposal was to use that mentioned 'wildcard' (discrete direct qualification) NOT for the fourth ranked team on their local leagues the previous season (which currently is a qualification spot) but rather for the better historically ranked team from that league that didn't finish top four.

Basically the best 4 leagues would then have - as they proposed - three teams on direct qualification plus the fourth one chosen from their best UEFA 5-year ranking irrespective of where they ended up on their local league the previous season.

The thing is this would NOT have qualified MU for example. Nor City. Chelsea would have gotten the go ahead.
In Italy, neither Milan nor Inter would have gotten the green light, I would have been Flore and Roma.

I wonder exactly what did they try to do here as this proposal seems pretty . . . ill conceived.

So would it be possible to have, for example, a team in the 2. Bundesliga playing in the CL?
