I don't like it. Your player is fouled and to add insult to injury (pun intended), he gets a temporary red card as some sort of weird punishment?!

I understand that some players fake injuries, but there are many cases where you feel pain for a few seconds and then it subsides... it must happen very often in matches. You simply cannot punish the victims or force them to 'man up' and stand up through pain just so that cheaters would have one less card up their sleeve. Because, let's face it, cheaters will still find a way to cheat and this proposition would only end up hurting the honest guys.

I think that they're being paid enough to 'man up' a little...

The Good, The Bad, And (of course) The Ugly

Postby tflags » Thu Dec 15, 2016 12:51 pm

Video assisted refereeing made its debut yesterday during the first match at the Club World Cup. How did it go? Well, have you heard of the good, the bad and the ugly?

The Good: A penalty situation none noticed (replays show not even Kashima's players protested) came about after a free kick was shot. This is one of the more typical situations in football as many players rush towards the goal line making it virtually impossible to keep track of everyone. After the free kick (and foul), the game progressed normally. After a few minutes after the game stopped Kassai rushed to the sideline and awarded the penalty after checking the VAR monitors next to the pitch.

The Bad: Although The Guardian calculates it took the referee around 44 seconds to check the monitors, the game was stopped for a full five minutes between the video referee first calling Kassai to explain what was going on until he awards the penalty by pointing at the spot. It also looked kinda weird as the VAR waited for a game stop to make the call. Kinda begs the question what happens if the game stops due to a goal or another penalty for example: Are you going to have two penalties in a row? What about a goal for followed by a penalty against?

The Ugly: The first time VAR was used officially came about on a foul on a Japanese player rushing towards goal inside the box. That player, unfortunally, was offside first of all.

Since most players care most about the money today, how about we start messing with their salaries... for example they're 'betting' say 10% of their week salary every game: losing a game means they lose 10% of their week salary and it goes to the winning team. A crazy idea but I want the mercenaries to feel losses.

Orange cards look good on paper but in reality when two teams are drawing in a knockout match and a player gets an orange card, his teammates will spend ten minutes wasting time until the player can rejoin the match.

No offsides? It's what makes 11-a-side football.

I don't hate the "orange card" idea and I actually think I would be okay with run-up penalties. I could probably get on board with some sort of foul-accumulation automatic card as well (though I'm not sure that's what he's proposing).

IMO an "orange card"/sin bin type idea would only make sense for things like players faking injuries or diving. I don't think it would really work for common fouls. I wouldn't mind if there was a set number of fouls allowed before an automatic yellow, either, but I'm not really sure how you'd determine what that number is.
The traditionalist part of me thinks that run-up penalties is silly, but honestly, I'd probably be alright with it. Sure I'd protest for a bit but I think once it actually happened it'd be fine. IMO, it's something that is easy to oppose in idea but once seen in action isn't so bad. Say what you will about MLS/NASL but those old penalty shootouts were really entertaining and I think it gives the GK a bit more of a fighting chance beyond committing to dive one direction and hope for the best.

Four quarters? No. No offside? No. No AET? No.
