But he will never be world class, he will never ever be closed to what Schweinsteiger was.

Totally agree, playing alongside Alonso is pretty much like playing with 10 players on the field and the opposition with 12. On the other side if a very good offer comes for him (like 90 mio) wouldn't be a bad idea to ship him off.

A good move for Bayern to extend his contract - he's becoming one of the best midfielders in the world. All he needs is a true defensive midfielder to partner with....

Whats wrong with Vidal? Vidal played a bit higher because of Alonso, but he is still a good DM as the best world can offer.

Vidal is not a "sitter" so to speak he is best used when he has freedom of movement to roam into the box and offer support higher up the pitch. It would be a waste to keep him in a traditional DM duty where he shields the back four...

The modern DM is not even a "sitter" anymore. Look at the goals Casemiro scores, look at where Busquets is going, look at where Kante or Khedira are going. The modern DM is a roamer just like a proper midfielder nowdays.

I think he means another type of DM, a destroyer, Vidal is a great box-to-box midfielder who would tackle his own mother but I don't think that Thiago+Vidal stuck together perfectly. Maybe with another midfielder in a trio next to them they can perform better.

Thiago needs a typical pitbull DM next him to perform at the highest level and bring balance, Vidal moves forward very much and his temper doesn't help in the critical situations. My personal opinion is that the midfield is our weak spot, two of our vital players are Vidal and Thiago, since Alonso is leaving, I'm blaming them for getting owned almost in every big occasion they were up to.

Rewind the 2 games against Real and tell me where they were getting owned when there were 11 vs 11 on the field. The simple fact about the Real games says it all: 3-2 for Bayern when 11 vs 11, 4-0 for Real when being 11 vs 10. A man less in a CL quarter means everything, everywhere - defence, midfield and attack.

Achilles post pretty much sums up what I was trying to convey, Vidal isnt a Kante, Casemiro or Busquets cause what he offers offensively is 10x more than both of those players combined. Regulaing him to a more defensive role takes a lot of the good parts of his game which is primarily his aggressive nature to get involved in all areas of the pitch offensive and defensive.

Edit: But this is the Thiago thread so lets not derail it

The other commenters pretty much said it. If Thiago is playing in a mid/high position, and Vidal is running everywhere, there is a big gap between the midfield and defense. This causes both Thiago and Vidal to drop back, limiting their effectiveness. Just my two cents...
