Goetze was doing better than Neymar at the time... and many were convinced that so would be for a long time.
When they met with their respective NT, Goetze was the one who stole the show, not Neymar... even if it was only a friendly.
Goetze was instrumental in BVB's CL campaign... he was part of nearly every goal they scored. Him missing the final was a big blow for BVB.

In short... Neymar>Goetze.

You forgot to add that he's still better than Goetze though.

So? Messi's better too, let's get him, shall we? Ibra is available for 36m - we should get him!!

(Obvious enough now, or do I have to keep going? )

First of all they play different positions... And while I agree they're both on the hype train, Neymar is the very definition of a hype kid...
That being said... He IS performing better AT THE MOMENT... But you never know if he would in Germany... And he cost thrice as much... That would've been WAY harder for FC Bayern to digest had he been a failure... That 37m for Götze we can actually live with - should he leave...
I thought that was a pretty obvious no brainer...

Götze was a no-brainer yes. But IF Neymar was available, it was a mistake not to get him. He's worth every penny they've spend on him and will be worth even more in the future.
Locked on next ballon d'Or winner after Messi.
Also not so sure about different positions...Neymar works wonderful as a central attacker and winger. Exactly the positions Götze has been playing for us.

Neymar hype kid? LOOOL. Before, yes (when he was in Brazil) but not anymore. Balon D'or finalist, Treble winner, Last season's UCL top scorer, 21 goals & 10 assist this season on league and you still call him a hype kid? You're funny.

He even carried Barca when Messi was out for 2 months and destroyed Madrid at Bernabeu. Dude get real, seriously.

When we signed Goetze... Neymar didn't reach a CL final. We didn't need to sign anyone, Goetze is paying that price... and spending like a billion for an UNPROVEN player that we didn't need that much. Goetze was proven for a difference and way more cheap... so you can't blame the board on this one, except that it would've been better if we didn't sign anyone as things turned out. It would have been completely insane to spend that sort of money on someone unproven in Europe... direct encounters until then, Goetze - Neymar 1-0.

The thing is when the transfer happened it was justified to not buy into the hype. It was too big a risk. Neymar has since proven he was worth the money and the hype, but the Gotze transfer made more sense at the time.

And Bayern had to sign a German or two under Pep... and who better than the most promising of them all. We don't have the best record with shipping players directly from Brazil... the last one ended in jail... and how the Neymar transfer was dealt with, not sure that someone didn't deserve a jail sentence in all that story but that's Spain.

You seem to be very good at misunderstanding and picking out cherries ;)
You didn't react to what I said about him getting along in Germany, and you misunderstood the hype-comment...

A hype sometimes is justified, you know?! ;)
Neymar was supposed to carry an abysmal Brazil to a WC? Get real...
Also, Ballon D#or is shit and you should know it...
That being said the kid is good... Not 100m good, but very good...

But again: we still don't know how he would turn out here... We've had our problems with Brazilians and South Americans before...

Again: Götze made sense back then... Even in retrospect...
At the moment, they're not on the same level, also true... But I don't think it's due to Götze's talent, but to his character and mental attitude...

Bayern has problems discharging Götze at a reasonable level which don't turn to the worst transfer since Poldi. Neymar is one of the best players in Europe. That's about as much you have to consider before ending this discussion.

But did you know it back then? I think only few would have guessed Götze would take it three steps down?!

Also: Liverpool will cough up enough :P ;)

He indeed carried Brazil at WC until he got injured but whatever. If that makes you sleep at night, so be it.

He did carry them... But no way were they good enough with or without him to make it to the finals... If not for the climatic circumstances there would've been WAY more competition...
