Barcelona looking to secure Mats Hummels after scouting him heavily [source]

If they're after him, he'll most likely join them over us...

Hummels top level is amazing, but he rarely plays on his top anymore. Mustafi is a much safer card, maybe lacks the passing that Hummels possesses but other than that he is better.

Germany has got arguably the best defense... I'd field a back three, Mustafi-Boateng-Hummels.

Mustafi's form hasn't been extraordinary this season and his price tag is disproportionate, the only reason why some are hyped about him is his german passport.

I really have no idea why people make Mustafi such a big deal. He's german and has a melodious sounding name.
His season has been meh and his release clause is €50M  For a player like him that's laughably high.
I'd think about him for €25M, because that would represent his level quite well.

Ideally we'd look for a left footed CB (Laporte) or a Boateng 2.0 (Tah).

This is the kind of post that sends a thread off-topic. If you want to compare players, next time please use the generic transfer thread, because this post inspired others to talk about Mustafi on a thread specifically meant for Hummels.

One of the most injury prone CB's out there

But that Boateng--Hummels partnership is pure gold
I TRUST IN ARJEN ROBBEN

I hope you don't mind. I agree and it's really bad that Badstuber is no longer a part of this crew. He used to be Germany's no. 1 back in 2010 along with Hummels. Then Höwedes has been there all the time, Boateng after he moved to Bayern has become one of the best... Mustafi showed up two years ago, Ginter is a bit struggling. But all in all, Germany are secured in terms of central defense.

The biggest problem are fullbacks - completely limited in these positions, depth not to mention.

Regarding Hummels' transfer rumors, Arsenal are very interested while Barcelona have been interested in the last 5 years and still nothing of this move so far. :D
Also, I'm absolutely sure that Klopp is monitoring this situation around the German defender since Liverpool have a pure catastrophe of a defense no matter how great heroes were Sakho and Lovren against the same Hummels last Thursday.

I'm very sure that Bayern aren't interested at all. He gave us clear twice in the last 5 years that won't return to Bayern. In fact, I share the opinion that at this moment Bayern can't be interested in another glassy footballer. We already have Badstuber who hasn't been playing seriously at Bayern for the last 3 and half years and Benatia who after 3 played matches watches Bayern on TV screen or Allianz Arena VIP seat.
Cada loco con su tema.

Not really, no. I think people don't remember how much he was vilified under Heynckes at times. It was Guardiola who turned Boateng into a world class defender. Hummels, I feel, is a defender who needs a very specific system in which to shine, much like Dante did. I don't think he is quick enough to adapt to Pep's high line. But Ancelotti... :-k

Even then, I don't want him on principle.

Well I agree with Boateng who became a boss under Guardiola.

But Hummels needs a very specific system to shine ?

He shines with Germany hybrid style
He shines with Dortmund massive pressing and counter-attack team by Klopp
He shines with Dortmund possession style with a high-line (no much as Bayern ok, but still) by Tuchel

Then I don't know what are you talking about. He doesn't need any very specific system to shine.

Dante yes, he needs to be protecte A LOT bye his midfield, like under Jupp.
