Jan Vertonghen

Postby Payam » Mon Jan 16, 2012 3:04 pm

According to Munchener Merkur, we have made a official offer for Ajax (Left footed?) CB Jan Verthongen.

Source: http://www.soccernews.com/bayern-table-e15-million-bid-for-ajax-star-italian-giants-battling-for-palombo/86799/

EDT: Does someone know if he is better than what we currently have? How has he been playing this season? Strengths, weaknesses and such.

Vertonghen has been capped 35 times for Belgium but that doesn't speak a lot about his skills. I know he is good in Football Manager but I haven't quite watched him play yet.

Can you copy paste my post from the General Trnasfer section. I gave details about Jan. He is the Ajax captain & being an Oranje fan obviously I know a bit about him for sure.

Copy paste it. I will add some comments. It's a great signing. I am not sure if it should be 15 Million with only 1 year left in his contract after this half season. Anyways he is a left sided defender & we have Gustavo & Badstuber so i have my doubts. His build-up play & distribution is probably the best in the world.

I would still go for Hummels is available,he is still a BETTER defender.

Now I know why one member of croatian Bayern forum today has mentioned somekind of van Buyten's compatriot in speculations with us and his help for adjustment at new club.

After one Belgian comes another one, hmmm... Too bad that we missed with Thomas Vermaleen while he was playing for Ajax and who is today an excellent defender at Arsenal.

We must find much better than Vertonghen. I'm not saying that he is a bad player, but someone stronger and more qualitative should strengthen Bayern's central defence.

Here you go:

Mr.S wrote:About Vertonghen,he is the Ajax captain,LCB. Similar to Badstuber somewhat, slightly quicker & a better header. He has lapses of concentration & sometimes can dissapear from the game but he has a high upper ceiling. Scores off corners & set-pieces. His principal quality is his technical ability, fantastic passer, even better than Badstuber & with he is IMO the ball playing CB in world football(of all Quality CB's).

I am not sure if he is the right candidate though. LBC,left footed, great passer, slightly prone to lapses,he is very similar to Badstuber in a way.

His contract runs out in 2013 so he will probably be available for 10-12 Million odd,his release clause is rumoured to be more than 20-25 Million.

Congratulations for anticipating this rumour =D>

What I found hard to believe in the source is that out of the blue, without any rumours, we supposedly bid 15 million euros. Not that surprises haven't happened before, but they are not too common.

That's why I personally don't believe this rumour.
Our board has many qualities, a sneaky transfer is not one of them.

Have patience, we now must.

What I heard from a friend who is an Ajax fan is that he has quality but is highly inconsistent.

Slightly. He is not inconsistent. I mean he is but the major problem is he loses concentration. He is still young 19-20 odd although he is Ajax captain. No 19-20 year old can ever be consistently WORLD CLASS.

He is a fantastic prospect,he can & I think he will end up being better than Vermaelen or maybe Kompany. But i wanted a proven 23-24 year odd CB who has already played in a top league & whose main strength is pure Defence.

Jan is one of the only Ajax players ever to make it big while on a loan. Usually players break through into Ajax,Jan scored a goal against Ajax & cost them their league victory while on loan. He scores goals(headers through set pieces like Jan vertonghen).

His passing skills are on a different level, plays CDM for Belgium because they already have some fantastic CB's. He has leadership,HUGE LEADERSHIP skills, marshalls teh defence. But I dont see two Left Footed slightly similar CB's in Badstuber & Jan playing together. Feels weird as Bayern are unwilling to bench Bads.

Why would Bayern pay 15 Million for a Back-up?? No need to under-estimate Jan though,I see him becoming better than Vermaelen.

EDIT -> He is 24. Didn't know he was that old. I still believe this is a great transfer. My 2nd possible favourite behind Hummels. I still wish Hummels would come back though.

He definitely is a goal scoring CB and also quite strong in Defense. I feel we should sign him and Howedes and let DVB and Breno go.
We can play
Howedes - Boa-Bads- Vertonghen in worst case!

No idea who this guy is, but I think it's more likely that we'll go for a right-footed CB since we have Badstuber. Heynckes doesn't seem as obsessed as LVG in having a balance though.

I think that we need to buy players that are prospects and have the chance of becoming very good players. Same with the barcelona players or Man u players. They buy players that have not proven themselves yet and mold them into tremendous players.

Look at Vidic, he was a nobody untill he proved himself at Man U one year and he exploded as being one of the best. Same thing with Pique, Man U let him leave to barca, he proved himself at barca and exploded as probably the best CB of our time.

So I completley disagree when people say, we need to buy a proven defender and such. I think that whenever a new player comes into the team he needs to prove himself all over again.
