David Alaba

Marcelo was really brilliant, I hate to admit. If Robben had been allowed to "run at Marcelo at will" I think we would have seen at the very least some trademark Robben left-footed curling attempts. Marcelo limited Robben to layoffs to Lahm, or else forced Robben to recycle the play. As well Marcelo saved Real Madrid on the line TWICE. Infuriatingly. Honestly Cristina gets the applause for being able to score from offside, but the heroes of the game were defenders on both sides. Our CB's and Marcelo.

Alaba improved the second half, but his crossing was atrocious. And if we are gonna go after some players for turning the ball over to Real trying something ambitious, Alaba was guilty of the same.

I don't buy this argument people like to throw around, I doubt there is a 20 something player without one. People making this argument sound like old men complaining about today's youth....

Let's agree we didn't well to stop Marcelo. Firstly, we gave so much time with ball and space to their wing backs. Secondly, both Alonso and Lahm are weak on 1vs 1 duels. On the other hand, Alaba played vs a team with more density, more aggressive approach.

Bayern won't sell Alaba. Stupid Spanish press started their lies again.

I highly doubt alaba will stay in Germany for his whole career.

Alaba always represented a player that wanted to also be a celebrity footballer, moreso than just a footballer. Maybe not this summer or the next, but Alaba is someone that probably will leave bayern for a different team/project imo.

Marcelo isn't the greatest defensive fullback, but offensively he's significantly better than Alaba. At barcelona, I dont know if he can replace alba now, but in the near future alba definitely will be replaced moreso than marcelo at madrid. However, unlike bayern, where ribery supported him well defensively, alaba will be exposed more in spain defensively with neymar on his wing.

always said going to spain would be a good test for alaba

And we all have a brain, two eyes and a nose :P

Problem is not Instagram itself, it's the way he uses it. He spends too many time fooling around with it. I just hope he somehow recovers his form because I miss the old Alaba.

I wouldn't like to see him leaving because I still have hopes on him, but at this stage I wouldn't make a drama if he's sold for a crazy sum (+100M)

But as I said, I hope he stays.

I keep seeing reports linking him with Barca (granted it’s mostly the Don Balon scum) framing it like they are his “dream” club. Could their be anything to these rumours??

I dont want him to leave. He’s one of my favorites. Although, imo he’s regressed the last few years he still a VERY good, important player. Bernat is a great backup but that’s it.
With Lewa’s possible/likely departure and trying to sign at least one winger, I don’t want the board to have to find a new starting LB as well.

D.Alaba on his future: I'm aware that I one day will have to make a decision, and I still feel great here. But I can also imagine taking a different path, making the next step or seeking a new challenge. But I leave that open. I have goals for this season I want to reach [Kurier]

Well, maybe it's time for Bayern to move on from Alaba as well.

Every season for the last 4-5 seasons, the sentiment has been that he could be the best left back in the world.

There really has been no remarkable improvement in his game in all this time. You compare that with someone like Marcelo, who would evoke laughter when it was suggested he could be a world class left back and not just a dribbling show pony. Well, Marcelo has dramatically improved his all round game and understanding of the position while Alaba still can't cross the ball which makes we wonder sometimes if he is naturally left footed at all.

Also, this nonsense about his desire to play in midfield but doing whatever it takes for the club really needs to be addressed by the Bayern. I don't know what kind of bullshit the Austrian coaching staff are feeding him about his abilities in midfield. He was absolute shite at Euro 2016 . It's a clear indicator of the lack of talent in Austria that he keeps picking up their player of the year award.

^So in your pov, if someone isn't the world's best at his position he can't play at Bayern?
Why do people keep comparing Alaba to Marcelo, he can be as good or less, that's ok.
His crossing is mediocre but his defending and overlaps are fine. Due to the lack of fulls backs more and more coaches change their tactics to a 5-man-defense. We can't just sell Alaba because he hasn't been improving, even tho his crossing is bad he can still assist and defend.
If it's true that he has been whining every summer over a move to the wings or midfield, then yes. Then we can sell him and cash in 70m++

I don't think he's saying to sell him because he's not the world's best.
But rather because for years we have all been SO sure he will be (or some would claim IS) the best left back in the world.
I like Alaba just fine, and he's plenty young still (25) - and I wouldn't move on from him just for sake of moving on, obviously we'd have to have a better replacement lined up (and in today's market quality fullbacks are hard to find IMO).
But it is a bit concerning IMO that he really hasn't made any significant improvement in his game in like 3, 4+ years now (and it took Jupp returning to get him even back on track to begin with). IMO he's not any better now than he was in 2014.... Interesting player.

Good post. I think Alaba peaked in 2013/2014. I'd dare say that not only did he not improve but perhaps regressed ever-so-slightly. His lack of improvement has been a huge disappointment in my opinion because I expected him to be much better today than he is.
