Postby JANCKER » Fri Dec 30, 2016 3:45 pm

According to The Sun, Bayern are interested in Christian Pulisic.

Arsenal and RB Leipzig are also interested.

We have not trained him to sell him. He has an ongoing contract until 2019, but for to his development, the club is always ready to talk about an extension," Zorc told to the Sport Illustrated.

Am I the only one wondering why he didn't extend to 2021 or 2022?...

Either Dortmund are not sure he's the real deal in the long run, or something tells me Pulisic could possibly be looking to use Dortmund as a jumping board in a couple of years...

Mate - typical Croatian name, especially among Bosnian, Herzegovinian and Dalmatian Croats. :)

Unfortunately, he's American. This situation is odd, because according to my youtube/wikipedia research, it looks like his parents gave Christian his middle name after his grandfather. Which would make you think they know how to properly speak or pronounce Croatian, or else they'd simply pick an Anglo-Saxon middle name. However, Pulisic I think went on record saying he pronounces his last name the American way. I don't know any Croatian, but am I wrong to guess it's the same way the German announcers pronounce Ivan Perisic's name? Regardless, if he doesn't pronounce that right, who knows what the odds are that he pronounces his middle name the proper Croatian way.

This phenomenon fascinates me in America. Not to stereotype (ok I'm totally stereotyping), but after a certain point Americans forget how to properly pronounce their own names. It would blow my mind, and then I remember my parents emigrated here and somehow were totally fine when immigration butchered the pronunciation of our family name and somehow we've kept it ever since. I wonder at the phenomenon because I can't tell if it's certain ethnic groups that are quicker to assimilate into the Anglo-dominant culture of the US than others, or if it only looks that way because ethnic groups arrived in different waves and some have just had a longer period to assimilate. The Irish really had no problem; it's impossible for an American to mispronounce O'Reilly. Hispanics and Asians... many are closer to when they first immigrated. Germans mostly forgot how to pronounce their names, though many arrived two hundred or more years ago. As for the Poles, forget about it they completely gave up!

This is how an emotional Croatian commentator pronounces Perišić:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KjUNSr ... tu.be&t=44

Some assimilate quicker...

His parents intentions were clearly to adapt when they named him Christian, because Christian is spelled Kristijan or Kristian in Croatian. Or they'd have named him just Mate because middle names aren't common in Croatia. He's originally Pulišić and not Pulisic...

My guess is that they wanted to name him Mate but that just wouldn't work that well there... I have many cousins there that have mostly English first names and ancestoral middle names.

It is that when the English gets in you, it's harder to pronounce words/names from others languages... I know that because I have many Americans coming over every year. They laugh at how we pronounce some words in English, but we laugh back at how they pronounce other languages. We can learn when a mistake is pointed out but they hardly can even then... they have the English pronounciation ingrained.

Reading the last few comments makes me sad. I agree about most Americans' pronunciation, and am not arguing, but it still makes me sad. I am a first-generation American, my mother was born in Luxembourg, and amongst our family we speak a mix of languages. Predominantly English now, but also German, French, and luxemburger. I like to think that Christian and his family pronounce his middle name the traditional (Croatian) way, but this Anglification (my own word) happens so often.. sorry for the off-topic
