Axel Witsel

Postby appudds » Mon Mar 28, 2011 1:20 am

Young midfielder Axel Witsel could be on his way out of struggling Belgian giants Standard Lige at the end of the season as German outfit Bayern Munich have shown an interest in signing the 22-year-old, TZ reports.

Bayern are eager to add some more depth to their midfield in the summer transfer window and sporting director Christian Nerlinger supposedly sees Witsel as a useful addition to the Bavarians' squad.

Witsel is a product of the Standard Liege youth academy and has developed into a key player at the Rouches since making his official debut in September 2006. The Belgium international has since made well over 100 official appearances for Liege.

Nerlinger saw Witsel live in action in Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier between Belgium and Austria and witnessed the midfielder helping the Rode Duivels to a 2-0 win by scoring a brace.

The midfielder's current contract with Liege runs until the summer of 2013 and an offer in the region of €8 million would be needed to lure him away from the Belgian side.

He would be a good signing as a backup for Robbery. He can play on both wings.
He has scored 5 goals in 17 matches for Belgium.

Wikipedia wrote:On 30 August 2009, Witsel sparked controversy when he broke Marcin Wasilewski's leg by stamping on his ankle during the match between Anderlecht and Standard. Following the tackle, Witsel protested the red card, claiming that it was an accident without intent, before being sent off the pitch. He soon apologised, but was the subject of criticism from several media outlets and numerous death threats from angry Anderlecht and Poland fans. The initial ban until 23 November by the Belgian Football Association, was later reduced on appeal to eight matches.

You got something wrong there. He can play on either wing, but his best and natural position is in defensive/central midfield. The role on the wings doesn't get the best out of him, any team that purchases him to play there is just wasting money.

Thanks for the info! I haven't followed him playing at all, and I got my info from his Wikipedia article. If what you said is the case, we don't really need him.

Zenit are crazy to spend 80 million on Hulk and Witsel.
Maybe Hulk, i can admit. He's worth the 40.
But definitely Witsel isn't worth even a quarter of that.

But I think he has enough mind to think and spend his €80 mln. And anyways its his money so he has right to invest in anyone he likes too.

Zenith are having some high hopes for the CL this season. If their players glue fast, then they're my dark horse of the tournament.
