I really liked this guy when I saw him play (forget where...maybe the preseason). Although having Alaba, Bernat, and him at would be senseless. It could mean that Alaba would take Alonso's Position in midfield when he leaves next summer.
Bayern for life, I just want to see at least one game...thats all I ask

Maybe we're not so convinced of Bernat anymore?

Ive recently read that Bayern want to extend with Alaba next year and he mentioned in some magazine that he was happy with finally playing more in midfield last season (which had been promised to him upon his last extension) and that he is back to playing more in defense this season (due to injuries). The article said that this might be an obstacle to renewing his contract.

--> If letting Alaba play more in midfield is what he wants and the club wants to fulfil this wish, then it would make sense for us to move for another LB so that new LB and Bernat can battle it out and Alaba does not have to move back into defense if Bernat doesnt perform or injures himself.

Bernat played better than expected last season but there seems to be doubt if he can take the next step. But bringing in some competition for the position might just do the trick :-)

As much as he's good in midfield - Alaba is a LB... and a world Top 3 in that position. His wishes may be different and his NT position is different.

Alaba can be a CM in some other team, but not in a full squad Bayern. If I was a Bayern executive - I would rather buy a pure proven CM/DM than play Alaba there. Maybe he has the pace, shots and all, but even Kimmich or Alonso showed more. Yes, I know Alonso plays that position his whole career.
Just look at Verrati - he is atleast 3 levels above Alaba in the midfield position and they are the same age. And I can keep counting people which Bayern can afford to buy and they are 2+ levels above Alaba.

As much as I love Alaba - he is wrong about his position. And I'm afraid that his wish (even if he extends) can affect our midfield.
I'd rather have the best LB playing in his position than an above average "wannabe" midfielder.

You're wrong. Midfielders peak at around 28, David is barely 23. Lots of time to grow and already huge when given the chance to go central. He has outstanding vision and speeds up the tempo a lot, plus he is a workhorse. Fullbacks have a much more limited impact in the overall game than midfielders and frankly he excelling to the point he used to was more a result of his telepathic connection to Ribery + the fact that he is generally awesome, nothing especificaly Leftbacky IMO. He would add A LOT to our midfield if/when given the chance. IMO he would even better than Gündogan and would add a mean long range option to our Arsenal (pun intended :D). #DavidToMF

OK, but if Verrati is already so much above Alaba and he is 23 also, where does this take him?

Also, Alaba plays a hybrid DM position, never an attacking midfielder. How is that more offensive than a LB, especially at Bayern?

I would take Gotze and Thiago in a CAM position anyday. Even Costa showed more in CAM than Alaba.
And I would take Vidal or Martinez in that DM position anyday. Even Alonso, but it seems he will be gone next season. And Kimmich... he can turn out to be a beast - even on 20, his short passes are better than Alaba's.

So even without future midfield transfers - there is no place for Alaba in a fit Bayern midfield (except Pep playing Martinez CB which is sh*t).

None of the top teams would buy Alaba to play in midfield, except Arsenal maybe...

So far he is a better option out left than Bernat and against big teams he might need to play there. But for sure we need him in the midfield. I really hope someone can really take LB so that Alaba can dominate the midfield where he belongs. The fact that he can drop from midfield into a 3 CB line is just too useful. 8)

Yeah, Bernat looked promising but is slacking this season unfortunately...

I see Alaba as a b2b MF, not a CAM or DM, don't know where anyone got the CAM thing: 433 with Javi-Thiago-Alaba in MF would be wicked.

Grimaldo seems pretty good on going forward, good at taking FKs... except that I can't tell other for now. He can always turn out to be Barca's Contento if they're not renewing his contract.

He definitely has that ability to power forwards and get back defensively. Just huge energy.

Thing is: we definitely had our best games when Alaba played on the left... Be it as a wingback, LB or whatever... I doubt we will be this convincing with Bernat or any other player on the left... There's a few players crucial to our game - more so than others... And alaba (on the left!) is one of them...
