It's not a bad idea... but its implementation needs to be handled very delicately...

I think we may better name it "I find this post inappropriate"... and users should be advised not to use it, unless they find it necessary...

On a second note, we have a "Report" button which I think does exactly that!

Well the report button should be used to report offensive posts or spam.

A dislike button, as in a thumbs up or thumbs down which you can use not to report, but to show you don't agree with the statement of a post, has been suggested before, but for some reason never got implemented.

The report button sends a report to admins (not sure if sends it to mods too) to check if the post was offensive.

You can use this button if you find some post offensive.

The implementation of a dislike button with all those functions you described would be very difficult. In any case the most direct to point is a direct answer by definition, not a dislike button.

Ah so that is the reason. I have always wondered why, because I also think such a feature would be good.

P.S. Yes, mods can see reports.

Mods, I moderate a college basketball site in the U.S. which implemented somethign similar to the "like" or "dislike" function you are talking about. The process was highjacked by different posters always disliking posts by certain other posters. I highly recommend you not implement anything like it.

A dislike button is not something I want to implement because it could lead to fights/tension in the forum, and/or a childish "let me dislike all your posts" wars as OhioFan has experienced on another forum (thanks for the info).

That may be the most polite and thoughtful way ever to suggest one's refusal on a matter.
I like it.

About the dislike button : I think we better not implement it. There's one thing to 'thank' someone for appreciating a comment and there's other to ignore it or maybe quote and discuss on it. Expressing a 'dislike' by clicking on a buton is surely not the right way to go in a forum.
These are basically needed on news columns/articles where any open user can like/dislike someone else's comments. You don't talk to them.
There's a reason that even Facebook has not implemented it yet. [source]

The only see-able benefit is that the quality of content can be improved and posts with dislikes can be hidden.
May be if it were to be implemented in a way that people can dislike a post but the user who wrote that post doesn't know about. That is to hide the dislikes for his post from him. It'll appear as normal to him while on others screen after certain count of dislikes that post gets, that post can be hidden from view marked as 'Hidden due to 'x' dislikes.

But I think we are doing very good without it too. :D
