Altintop shows the way

The home side, meeting Germany's most successful club in a match to mark their centenary year, maintained parity of sorts for the first 20 minutes, although Toni should really have opened the scoring from a couple of good chances during that time. The Italian World Cup winner hobbled from the field clutching a knee on the half-hour, and will undergo a medical in Munich on Monday. Zé Roberto came on in his place.

Hamit Altintop finally netted the long overdue opener from 18 yards on 31 minutes, before young reserve striker Sandro Wagner doubled the advantage after a fine solo run just two minutes later. Altintop volleyed a Goal of the Month contender from the edge of the box after 36 minutes, before Bastian Schweinsteiger made the half-time score 4-0

Let's hope that's right! Still, guess he will miss the league cup :(

Hitzfeld was able to deliver immediate reassurance. "It's nothing too serious. He's suffered a strain,“ the Bayern boss announced. The Italian World Cup winner will rest for three or four days, but is set to resume the team training programme by Thursday.

The Italian international left the Italian camp after their 0-0 draw against France and has said he wants to play, but co-trainer Michael Henke is sceptical.

“For Saturday’s game it looks tight, we are presuming he won’t be fit” Henke said.

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni, who has given Toni permission to miss the Italian game against Ukraine on Wednesday, is also not confident that the World Cup winner be able to recover in time for the weekend.

Toni suffered the injury whilst scoring for Bayern against Hannover and had to be substituted. He missed the Bavarian’s 1-1 draw with Hamburg and only made the bench for Italy’s Euro 2008 clash with France.

Bayern Munich have hit back at claims from Italy coach Roberto Donadoni that they underestimated the extent of Luca Toni’s thigh injury.

Toni took no part in the Azzurri’s two Euro 2008 qualifiers against France and Ukraine after reporting discomfort in the injury picked up while playing in the Bundesliga.

But, after stinging criticism from Donadoni, Bayern team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt has hit back by claiming the club were unable to assess the striker due to a clause in his contract permitting only his personal physiotherapist from issuing treatment.

“We were not allowed to treat him so I am not aware of any responsibility. The facts have been twisted,” he told ‘Kicker’.

“If we had been able to do it then we would have been further in his progress.

“The muscle is improving, but I cannot predict if he will be ready for Saturday.”

Also Toni resumed training with the rest of the squad on Thursday (yesterday), but I doubt he will play any minutes on the Saturdays game against Schalke.

Bayern have received a huge boost with the news that striker Luca Toni has been cleared to feature in the crunch clash.

The Italy international picked up a thigh injury which forced him to sit out the recent Euro 2008 qualifiers against France and Ukraine.

"He has been given the green light (to play)," revealed coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.

However, the Munich boss was uncertain whether to field the attacker due to the club's heavy forthcoming fixture schedule.
