Apologies, the thought of replacing Kroos with Xavi just... just... overwhelmed me.

Both Alonso and Benatia are replacing Martinez. Bayern had no intention to enter the market up until his injury. So we can't reall say that we got Xabi to replace Kroos in particular.

Conspiracy: Xabi Alonso is Spanish.
Reality: They opted not to sell him because they know it makes more sense to keep Khedira.

It's also a possibility that we opted for Xabi because of his age and experience. We might not want someone long-term.

Either way, Real are stupid to let go of him. They only have Khedira left as DM. This transfer increases our chances to win the CL not by making us stronger but by weakening Real.

Real Madrid fans are really mad right now.

With Javi Martinez done for the season (yes, if everything goes well he could be back around April but I don't think he will be in his best form and we won't rush him) we need an experienced guy for the midfield. He will stay here for 2 seasons and that's what we need. I love Rode and Hojbjerg but Champions League knockout rounds are a very different thing

Schweini - Thiago looks like the best midfield combo for this team, but they are both injury prone and both of them are injured at the moment.

I agree that his wages seem to be a little bit high, but as someone mentioned before that's his last contract. He won't be asking for more money and we know how good and experienced player he is.

Xabi Alonso fits better in Pep's tactics

Khedira is more a fighter and suits better with Mourinho style while Xabi Alonso has world class ball distribution and Pep surely likes that. And also Xabi Alonso will be here for 2 seasons. Then our youngsters will take over. Khedira is younger and the situation would have been very different.

This makes more sense: Bayern want a 2-year loan deal while paying his wages. 10 mio over 2 years!!!

I don't think salary/transfer price fit into the team's budget tbh.
