Well that's the thing payments at a later stage mean that you hid them in the first place.
Uli and all of us can take some respite from the fact that he himself came forward about his mistake and paid/will pay the fines and the required tax.
That is the only thing that separates him from other tax-evaders and may get him some relief from the jury or judge(Not sure how courts work in Germany).
Going by the law-system of Germany having read about it in news only, I guess he'll be held guilty but his punishment may be less severe due to his voluntary report.

Yes, the "voluntary report" is what the lawyers are pinning their hopes on.

Anyway, what is it with Bayern and the legal system lately?

Hoeness --> may go to prison
Ribery --> may go to prison
Breno --> actually ended up in prison
Rummenigge -->
had a minor tax evasion charge [source]

Guardiola -->
narrowly escaped prison [source]

Apparently Muller and Robben were charged for the three hours of torture they put Barcelona under a few months ago.

On a more serious note, not only would it appear that there is no way Uli Hoeness is skipping jail time, it might very well be the case that he gets sentenced the full 10 years max penalty.

Prison time costs money to the tax payers.... Paying the amount of the evaded tax plus an additional percentage amount on his net worth value, the percentage varies according to if the evader came forward voluntarily or not and the amount of tax evaded is a win without no losses for the state.

The cost of prison time never comes into the equation. It'll be what the judge feels as an appropriate punishment for Hoeneß. What's the point in fining a millionaire? Where's the punishment in that? Maybe a suspended sentence or some sort of fine plus community service? Maybe. 3 years in jail. A realistic possibility.

Is it some fresh news?!
Last I heard, it was very much linked to the validity of his self-disclosure... Should that be judged as a legitimate act of self-disclosure (or something like that), he might escape the prison sentence.

Source is a University Tax Professor quoted by a very close friend of Hoeness. Tax cases above EUR1,000K are not EDIT allow to go on probation (EDIT2: there in an update on this) and hardly any judge would even think about the cost of keeping one in jail when, by contrast, setting an impunity example on a tax case is the single most costly error a government can make other than hiring Donald Trump as your Monetary Policy Minister. Just say'in.

I get that... and I've read in Germany tax evasions of over 1M are sentenced to jail...

Yet, there is some other side to this story as much as I understand: If they neglect Uli Hoeness' self-declaration, they are potentially encouraging all the giant tax evaders to go into hiding and not even think of a self-disclosure.... It is, by contrast, in the government's interest that tax evaders are encouraged to come forward and pay their due taxes voluntarily.....

They will make a example of him this is public case and giving him a soft sentence will mean it will encourage others to do it they have given prison sentences to hig profile cases in the past .
Peter Graf Is Sentenced To Prison in Tax Case

A German judge found the father of the tennis star Steffi Graf guilty on tax evasion charges today, but exonerated the top-ranked player, saying she had taken no active part in her father's misdeeds. After a 14-week trial in the southwestern city of Mannheim, Judge Joachim Plass ordered Peter Graf, 58, jailed for three years and nine months.
