Indeed. But IMO the core of the issue is that the Right side is not being stretched by Lahm. In a 433 the front three are supposed to be very mobile and interchange a lot but that is only possible if the FBs keep the other side's defense.

RM in 433 and 4231 have very different roles. 433 requires the orthodox pacy winger who can hug the touchline and immediately teleport to the box when required. 4231 doesn't do that.

It's the other way around!!! 4231 employs either classic or inverted wingers, while modern 433 employs a fluid front three rarely hug the line (think Dortmund last season or Barça under Luis Enrique!!!)

PD: 4141 is basically a 433

At least after today's performance it doesn't seem like it's him... I hope Carlo watched this match

Mueller showed that he can play anything and anywhere... he was just unlucky in the last couple of matches. One thing that he does with consistency is winning areal duels and often tracks back to help.

Bit of a misunderstanding, I meant that 433 would require wingers who have the ability to instantly switch from hugging the touchline to being in the box, not saying 433 wingers hug the touchline. In other words, as you said, 433 requires the most fluid wide players you can possibly field. Müller is a lot of things, but he is definitely not fluid.

xD I think Müller is one of the most fluid players in European football. IMO it's his core thing. Showing up both in the box and out wide with a lot of freedom (as well as joining in defense). Müller can score and can cross, what he can't do is stay fixed on the right side, which is what our FB should be doing. I think the ones who don't fit are Robben and Costa and the one failing to perform his role is Lahm.

IMO: Müller plays the same way Mhikitaryan did to great effect in BVBs left side.

Further clarification: when I say fluid I basically mean "doesn't stick to single position".

Involved in 6 of 8 Germany's goals in the WC qualifiers, 4 goals and 2 assists.

Grant Wahl spoke with Thomas Müller about how he moved to Bayern Munich from TSV Pähl, whom he imitated in his famous youtube clip and what logic has to do with being a Raumdeuter.
