And yesterday's game, considering the whole season, poses an interesting question whether or not he can fit into Ancelotti's team or not. :?

I think this penalty thing has become a burden on him. He's right in keeping away from them for a while.

At the same time, what about the giver-up attitude? How about he spends overtime training penalties so that his next one would be much better?

I don't think that's so heavy burden, does anyone remember here the penatly he nailed against BVB at Pokal finale?
I think that everybody here had negative thougths when Muller came up for his kick, still though he shot the best penalty. Perfekt execution!

And it was just a week after or so from the missed penalty against Atletico....
I find Muller too thick as a persnonality for a penalty to come under his skin and make him mentally vulnerable, his bad form since that game it's more a coincidence of a mix such as EURO,rehab both mental and physical, new coach/philosophy and a system that doesn't suits him well plus the bad beat he/we had against Atletico which affected everyone who was participating in that game.

He acknowledge that he has to improve in that area, that's not a surrender it's a healthy self-criticism, he'll come back stronger, I'm sure!

I think that it has to do more with his psyche than abilities... he needs to forget... Griezmann is going through a similar penalty crisis.

I'm worried about Müller. With the current 4-3-3 tactics that Ancelotti seems hell-bent on, and with Müller's current form, there simply is no place for him if everyone is fit. Ribery will always beat him for the left wing, Robben will always beat him for the right wing, Thiago is currently the best option for the central attacking midfield position and he has no chance displacing Lewandowski as striker.

Given no injuries, fitness issues, suspensions and tactic changes, Müller will have to sit on the bench.

Unfortunately you're right and there is no luxury having Muller on bench, it's not just another player for this team and definitely he is the best clutch player of Bayern. I can see a spot for Muller but Ancelotti doesn't seem to give a try nor to change his initial formation.

Thiago in Alonso's place
Muller in Thiago position.
Thomas can roam and provide help to any attacker, pressing into the midfield because of his stamina, open spaces for the others with his world class movement and game reading BUT cuts the way into the XI of Kimmich. 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1 suits better.

A mid triangle
----- Muller -----
Vidal ---- Thiago

I guess he'll have to settle for a super sub role. It's a shame but tactics are the problem here.
