Ancelotti's new Pirlo [source]

Atletico Madrid invite Carlo Ancelotti's Bayern Munich to the Spanish capital on Wednesday night and in doing so could help birth the next Andrea Pirlo.

15 years ago the Italian coach brought through the playmaker at AC Milan and now Thiago Alcantara is being readied for the role under the 57-year-old in Bavaria.

Typically, Bayern would sit Xabi Alonso in between the defence and midfield when playing away from home to utilise the Spaniard's experience, but a changing of the guard is likely to continue at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Controlling the play in last week's match at Hamburg, Thiago showed his ability to manage the tempo of his side to push forward his credentials as a long-term suitor to the position.

Ancelotti believes his characteristics match Pirlo's nicely, simply seeking for the Spaniard to have more discipline and self-control when going forward to complement his excellent technique."He can do anything with the ball at his feet," Die Roten's coach said of the former Barcelona man.

Indeed, Pirlo took over a season to settle into the role but is now a master, leading Ancelotti to assume a more-gradual transition for Thiago and Wednesday night could be a big step in that.

Not a bad comparison but I would say Thiago brings a lot more flair and is not as lethargic as Pirlo was...

Thiago won't even be the half of what Pirlo was at his best..
Neuer - Kimmich, Boateng(Süle), Hummels(Süle), Alaba - Vidal(Martinez) - Robben(Müller), Müller(James), Thiago(Vidal), Ribéry(Coman) - Lewandowski

That's a bit of an arrogant comment, he is young and flourishing under a new coach. I see him getting near pirlos level with carlo

He only lacks the unique shooting and free kick ability of Pirlo in my opinion...

Obviously, but has better dribbling and better defensive capabilities. He's actually a hard worker and a great tackler. He gets lots of balls back.

Not really....Thiago and Pirlo are similar players and it's not like Pirlo was a "complete" midfielder. He was world class in his position but he was put into teams that helped him excel. Pirlo clearly had weakness but they tend to be overlooked cause of being on successful teams.

Pirlo was a flop at Inter, after coming to AC Milan Carlo changed his position and made him WC. Of course he had weaknesses.

Pirlo was pretty slow and was a liability defensively. On the other hand,he was great on dictating the game and great long range passer.

Both Alonso and Bernat doesn't deserve to play for Bayern, however Thiago and Martinez are different. They were 2 of Pep's victims, considering they wasted 3 years with Pep.As far as l remember, Pirlo was nothing before Carlo. His performances as number 10 was not enough to be a starter for a big italian team. Then, Carlo moved him to regista, where he became world class in a short time.

Regarding Thiago, l think he is doing good now. Yet he has to be better. He needs to improve. Long shoots, long range passes, better on dictating the game, involving more in building ups, improving on set pieces. For a player at his potential, he still needs to work hard and has to improve.

Just to mention that being good defender doesn't mean that you have to run like a kamikazi to the ball, tackle hard and be aggressive!
Pirlo's tactical awareness and covering his teammates when defending was world class, he never left spaces or wholes to the defensive line sometimes a step on the right or left it's a better defensive action than a tackle. Kroos is similar to this style.

I keep reading on Thiago comparisons with proven players such as Kroos & Pirlo(!)
Guys he is not the half player Pirlo was, we're talking about THE master of deep lying playmaking with hundreds of masterclass performances against absolutely top class opponents, Thiago for the time being he can only perform like that against teams like Hamburg/Werder or Hertha it's harsh but it's the truth. Truth is also that his start this season is his best by far since he choose the Bayern shirt and I'm very happy about that.
