Former Ghana International player, Samuel Osei Kuffour, has revealed that he was offered 200,000 Euros to skip coming to play for Ghana in the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to him, the club, Bayern Munich offered him 200,000 Euros not to play at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Samuel Kufuor was sacked from the Black Stars camps during the 2002 AFCON for indiscipline. [source]

FIFA should impose a winter break period in Europe that covers the entire duration of the competition.

That's the jurisdiction of UEFA though, and UEFA doesn't really care about the AFCON. Of course, FIFA COULD impose it, but then they'd need to be fair and impose breaks for all countries during any international tournament. Due to different weather conditions and the requirements for playing a number of club matches a season, this is unpractical.

I think FIFA and UEFA should seriously think about changing the European league calendar by switching it to summer like the MLS.
In that way, the club and international competitions could be split and the congestion of friendlies, qualifiers and other tournaments that force players to take long trips to their home countries and leave their clubs could be removed.

Do you honestly not see the problem with this suggestion? Why do you think football stops in Summer in most of Europe?

I really don't see any obstacle in implementing this reform if there's the necessary political will.
The regular european season of football could stretch from march to november, so there will be no need for winter breaks.
International fixtures can take place in a separate period to be determined by all global football authorities.
This is how I see things resolved, in addition, the spring and summer are the best periods to play football in Europe.

No obstacle? So they stop in Morocco in summer, because of the heat.

You live in Casablanca, right?

Average highest temperature in summer times in Casablanca are 26C, and yet you don't play football in summer, because it's too hot. [source]

Average highest temperature in summer times in Malta are 32C, that's 6 degrees higher than in Casablanca on average, and you want us to play football in summer. [source]

In Malta, temperatures in August sometimes exceed 40C. You want people to literally die, just so that all players would be available for the AFCON? :|

And by the way, it's not just Malta.
Check out Rome for example which is around in the middle of Italy. [source]
The highest averages in July and August are 30C, still higher than Casablanca and not fit for playing football.

Yep, I live in Casablanca but the heat has nothing to do with the interruption of the moroccan league during summer, the calendar is merely inspired by the European model like in a vast number of countries.
As for the African Cup, it's impossible to organize in the midst of summer in sub-Saharan Africa because of the heat wave and the rainy season, while in Europe, the World Cup and the European Championship have been organized for centuries without any problem of this kind.

The World Cup and European Championship are organised from early June to early July, escaping the worst heatwaves (mid July to end of August). Also, matches are played in the evenings, or late afternoons at worst.
When it was played in Germany (which has relatively mild summers), players were complaining that it was too hot. [source]

you get old and learn more and more, never crossed my mind that Morocco (casablanca) has cooler summers than we have in Malta
Is it because of the Atlas mountains ?

No one died, but it was dropped as a competition mainly because it was considered too inhumane to play in such conditions.

I'm not a specialist, but I think the atlantic ocean has a cooler effect on the city.

I read some anecdotes on the subject, but the official reason for abolishing this tournament was due to changes made on the whole european cups system after the election of Platini.
