Ottmar Hitzfeld on Renato Sanches' unconvincing form: "His age will have something to do with his difficult start. Let's not forget that he is only 19 years old. He was injured and it was an expensive transfer, therefore the expectations are accordingly high. You must bear in mind that Sanches did not come to any Bundesliga club, but to FC Bayern. He will have to get used to the stiff competition for a place and understand what that means for him. I find it quite normal that he still needs time."

He became quite mainstream after his domestic double with Benfica, EURO award and the fuss around his trasnfer to Bayern & fee.

Who are the nominees? I think he will win it!

This is an award by the most biased newspaper in Italy (I was going to say the world but then I remembered of the existence of North Korea and made some assumptions on their newspapers)... take it with a pinch of salt.

Donnarumma then? :D

They're Turin-based, and extremely biased in favour of Juventus. Last season they had well over 10 separate articles crying about the referee in the matches against Bayern. No way it will be Donnarumma; I'm thinking Coman.

I dunno, the choices typically make sense. Those who have been forgotten were truly very promising at the time.

Former winners:
2003: Van der Vaart
2004: Rooney
2005: Messi
2006: Fabregas
2007: Aguero
2008: Anderson
2009: Pato
2010: Balotelli
2011: Gotze
2012: Isco
2013: Pogba
2014: Sterling
2015: Martial

Last year, Coman (off-topic but since you mentioned him as a possibility) finished in second place. I think he stands a chance of winning it this time around.

Maybe so but it's undeniable that Gotze, Isco, Pogba, and maybe even Balotelli deserved it at the time.

Sanches has a big chance ... also Rashford as an outsider
