I certainly don't agree with the whole of it, I think it's caricaturization at its worst, which is why I was so surprised to see Michael Cox' name attached to it. But I guess it's largely the image that people outside the clubs van Bommel played for have.

Why do you keep putting Cox on a pedestal? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE some of his work; but there are articles from him where he shows he can be so amateurish/borderline un-objective.

He can get it wrong quite often, yeah, not to mention he has his unobjective biases, but he usually keeps his negative biases to himself.

It would have been fitting had they staged a sending off and he got one last standing ovation as he headed to the locker room. Also, I'm glad Robben rounded the keeper instead of trying to shoot, it's much more effective.

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere in the thread, but I watched this game live and this scene was hilarious:

I once tried to find the video but couldn't. Anyone has it?

Also Bommel was one hell of a captain, I will indeed miss him. :/

Van Bommel sees himself as a youth coach at Bayern in the future and even KHR says he could have a role at the club as a coach one day :D [source]

Lets hope he doesn't teach them how to become a card collector.

I can just imagine him coaching the senior team in a two legged match. First leg just send out the reserves (so cards dont matter) with orders to break things up (like legs for instance). Second leg play the best team and batter whatever remains of them

He was a master in fouling without collecting a card. I remember that 2010 WC when he made the most harsch fouls and somehow got away without collecting a card. He was a master in forcing a foul from other players:)...sometimes Kroos does that and I just laugh and MVB crosses my mind:)

MvB's most impressive achievement was getting a yellow card 2 minutes into the Battle of Nürnberg and not getting sent off. What a genius sociopath he was...
