Yes. Because it seems like he's lost pace and acceleration and he'll probably never get that back due to his health problems. But he has good technique and he reads the game well, so he might be able to have more impact from a more withdrawn position.

I agree, though if he does manage to somehow regain his pace and acceleration he needs to move back on that wing. He's got the skills for a superb classic #10.

I was quite impressed with him against us today. Created two really good chances, showed that he can dribble well again, was very press resistant, made good runs off the ball, positioned himself exceptionally well pressing, and had really good decision making. He should probably be played as a number 10 now that he's back up to strength.

He really should've started, he's been one of Dortmund's best players for like a month now (if not the best). The decision to have him on the bench and sub in while Castro played 90min was truly baffling to me...

Whatever the idiotic reasoning behind it, I'm glad for it. We very well might not have won if Gotze had started. We completely lost the ability to play through Dortmund's press the moment he came on, and we were forced to just bomb it forward far too many times. It's not often that I see Hummels being forced to play a long ball to no one, and the maddening thing was Gotze didn't even need to sprint to force it. He just always knew just where to position himself in order to disrupt the buildup.

Mario Gotze's goalimpact graph. Zero discrepancy from popular opinion until the summer of 2014.

I suspect Mario still has the metabolic disorder inside him.

He had it untreated for year. It probably did permanent damage to his body, but that doesn't mean he can't be a great player in the right system. Of course, the problem is that Dortmund doesn't even have a system at this point, much less the right one.

He is done with his career. Chubby will earn a lot of money and that's it. His highlight is that winning goal against Argentina in the World Cup final 2014, just as Lars Ricken's golden moment of the entire career was that spectacular goal in 1997 against Juventus in the CL final.
But Mario is the biggest German talent ever and this all in the last 5 years is way below the expectations. Too bad that this happened. He should've never joined Bayern, maybe the things around him would have been different today.

Cause someone else’s medical staff would’ve found the illness much sooner?

For what it’s worth: People still remember Ricken for that, and they will always remember Götze... Do you think someone who is not overly interested in the details knows Guido Buchwald or Paulo César? ;)

Not to draw up that whole discussion again, but it is an interesting topic - perhaps his condition was progressively worsening by the time he got back to BVB, but it's curious that their medical staff noticed his issue within months, while he was with us for years and we seemingly had no clue.

He’s ran 10+ kms for Dortmund I’m the past two games and has been doing his defensive/pressing work. Played full 90 in the last two games.

Fitness wise he’s been okay recently.

I really don't know how to read that Goal Impact graph, and I am someone that actually works with data.
