He is a good back-up. Nothing less/more.

In a team like Liverpool with less control and more duel in the league, he would look like Moreno who is benchwarmer for years.

Statistically speaking that's simply not true. I think you're being a bit clouded by bias here. Objectively speaking there's no evidence to support the notion that he "isn't reliable on a defensive point of view".

Last season per 90s - Bernat:
Higher pass completion
Same key passes
Same chances created
More assists
More goals
More tackles won
More successful take ons
More aerials won
More 50-50s won
More blocks
More clearances
Less defensive errors

Pretty much same numbers for Bundesliga or UCL.
I get that Bernat hasn't always been great but to talk like he hasn't improved and is nothing more than a backup is foolishness. He was better than Alaba in every single way last year (unless you really value the fact that Alaba had 0.2 more interceptions per 90 in BL....but less in UCL) and there's no way around that. Frankly if we didn't have Alaba and Bernat had been our starting LB for the past 4 years I doubt anyone would be complaining about him (except for maybe the fact that he's Spanish and there will always be someone to complain about Spaniards)

If I recall, Pep gave him plenty of time and there wasn't a lot of complaining (maybe for some defensive issues) until the last season with Pep, when he was awful and got rightfully benched. But I agree, he was great last season, pre-season looks very promising and he deserves minutes. And Alaba deserves a smack on the head (judging from last season that is.)

I'm not saying Bernat should start over Alaba - I don't believe that's the case - but I think he's criminally underrated. Is he as good as Alaba's best level? No, not really...but then again, very few are. I don't think we could ask for a better backup, to say the least. Doesn't complain, doesn't talk, just goes out and plays...and last year happened to play better than the starter. That's as good as we could possibly ask for.

The only backup winger right now is Kingsley Coman, and look's like Carlo is going to play him as a RW instead of LW What about trying Bernat as a LW when he's back ?
He's quite good offensively, and showed us that he's one step ahead this pre-season.

I think he'd probably be better in that position than LB

Transfermarkt says Coman will be back by April end but that website has been unreliable in the past.

If Coman is really out for the season then it makes sense to give Bernat game time at LW in the BL games.

What the club said when Coman got injured was that he would be out for several weeks, not the entire season. They might have understated the severity of the injury as they have been accused of doing in the past, but there is still no reason to write him off for the rest of the season.

I haven’t written anyone off. In fact I am still somewhat optimistic that we might see both Coman and Neuer back by the start of May. However, many users here seem to have given up (understandably if you ask me)

In any case, I think Bernat should start one or both of our upcoming BL games so that he gets used to playing on the left (with Alaba behind him) against decent opponents.

We are short of LW options with a 34 y.o. (Soon to be 35) Ribery as the first choice. With our lead in the BL we can afford to experiment a bit and have a decent LW backup in Bernat with reasonable experience under his belt. Bernat can dribble and has decent pace. If Bernat is having a stinker of a game at LW, we can always substitute him or change tactics.
