I read on twitter a similar comment. Possibly from Clark Whitney.

Clark Whitney merely said that the transfer "seems to be FCB's insurance if Badi has injury complications".
However yesterday I read an update on his injury and they said he was making good progress and is on track to feature again THIS SEASON.

That's great news, but we shouldn't rush him.

Then maybe Kirchhoff is actually too big of a talent for us to wait till the summer. I'll be watching some Mainz games from now on.

Shocking that Mr Bundesliga aka Clark would not be excited about a move that Bayern makes. Hearing him talk on twitter continuously about BVB and how good their players are, one immediately knows the guy is a BVB fan. Thus his opinions on Bayern are biased.

As far as this move I love it. I dont see how we lose here. Free transfer, highly talented (Sammeer's words not mine) young player at a position we need. Potential is huge and is willing to learn as a backup obviously and eventually take over.

How do we lose on this deal exactly? What's there not to like?

I can't believe that we have signed with this guy. Amazing! Great job from Sammer. He secured a replacement for van Buyten.

Little weird could be only why Kirchoff has decided to move to Bayern instead of S04, HSV, etc., thereby have a chance to play and to develop himself into a good CB, have a guaranteed place in the first team somewhere else. But he decided for this brave move and accept challenge among big boys like Dante and Badstuber, not to forget Boateng who is not poor iron.

I can't hide my satisfaction with this deal. :)

Free transfer, Germany Ux capped player, taller than God, fouls like Mandzukic on a bad day; even gives Hummel's aerial stats a run for his money. Not too shabby. Too bad he is suspended apparently; will have to wait a little bit to see him in action.

He was called a "diamond in the rough" by KHR or Sammer so he must have great potential. Sammer is surely keeping his word on developing for the future. Hopefully we will be seeing more youth development moves by him.

So actually nothing's been signed yet. Kirchhoff still needs to do the medical in Munich before signing the contract. This means that he will probably have to wait until the contingent is back from the Qatar training camp. In the meantime, he can either have a change of heart (à la Vidal) or fail the medical (in which case, the transfer generally falls through).

Re: Jan Kirchhoff

Mainz general manager Christian Heidel has not ruled out the sale of Jan Kirchhoff to Bayern Munich this winter.

The player has already signed a contract with Bayern Munich from July.

Kirchhoff's move to Bayern upon expiry of his current contract was announced on Thursday, but with Holger Badstuber ruled out injured until April, it has been speculated that Bayern may make a bid to sign the 22-year-old this month.

Although Heidel says he would not be keen on losing his side's central defender so soon, he has not ruled out the possibility.

"We would not like to endanger our sporting goals, and fortunately we don't have to do that from an economic viewpoint either," he said.

"Therefore, I cannot imagine a transfer taking place this winter. But, of course, I am always open to discussion when Bayern Munich call.

"If that eventually leads to Jan transferring sooner, I don't know, and I don't want to pre-empt talks."

Whether Kirchhoff leaves now or, as expected, in the summer, Heidel says he can understand the Germany Under-21 player's motivation.

"Even if I would have liked it if he were to have stayed in Mainz, I can fully understand him," he told Sport1 television.

"It's absolutely normal that he wants to take this chance. He told us at the turn of the year that he wanted to leave in the summer and take the next step and we found out on Thursday that he would be going to Bayern."

Kirchhoff has signed a contract until 2016 with the record German champions, whom he will join in July at the latest.

tz has picked this up too, with an added quote from the player himself:

"I would always take this option, but that is the topic of the clubs and does not depend on me"
