Haha! Out of absolutely nowhere, this actually ends up happening! I was pretty shocked to see it come up in my Facebook feed!

Some more info on our new signing Kirchhoff:

His full name is Jan Tilman Kirchhoff, and was born on 1st October 1990 in Frankfurt am Main. This means that he will still be 22 years old in summer when he transfers to FC Bayern. He is a right-footed centreback, which means we will now have 2 left footed CDs (Dante and Badstuber) a right footed CD (Kirchhoff) and Boateng who is equally good with both feet.

At 1.95m tall, Kirchhoff will be FC Bayern's tallest defender, ahead of Boateng (1.92m), Badstuber (1.90m) and Dante (1.88m). He is almost as tall as the probably-outgoing Daniel van Buyten (1.97m).

Regarding his injury history...
In the season 2009/2010, he spent 9 months injured from an achilles irritation
2010/2011 he suffered no injuries
2011/2012 he was out for 2 weeks due to knee problems
This season he was out for around 3 weeks with another injury.

I didn't expect this transfer to happen. I think he's going to find it hard to break into the team. But, for him it's a win/win move. He's going to gain valuable experience with us, and if it doesn't work out for him, he'll still be able to get a good Bundesliga team to transfer to.

DvB will be gone in the summer.

I wonder if there will be any attempts to negotiate a deal and buy him in this transfer window rather than in summer. He'd have more time to integrate with the team and be able to play in the CL against Arsenal.

Hard to complain about a transfer of his quality that is free. I wish though that the board would have gotten him vs Arsenal but they probably saw better value getting him for free in the summer. Bayern always like to do most of there summer shopping early he would be a good addition.

I have no idea what to feel about it, but can't help but think that this shows some lingering doubts about Holger's condition come summer.

Not just defender, he is the tallest player in our squad except for Van Buyten (not accounting any other possible transfers of course). Hopefully this means that he is good in the air, something which Bayern seem to be working on with the acquisitions of Dante, Martinez and Mandzukic.

As much as I would like it, I highly doubt that will happen considering that the club have already officially announced it.

Actually, the way I see it, it makes it more likely to happen. Because now that it's official, some fans (and possibly teammates) will be up against him. That would possibly make him push for a winter transfer rather than the summer one.

It would have been better if we'd have signed him to play now rather than next season.
Whatever! We've got ourselves a good prospect in him.
There is really going to be tussle for places come next season. Still too far...

A few days ago it was all like Shalke are going in and bam! He joins Bayern. :D Sammer =D>

Jan Kirchhoff

He is not yet a Bayern player, but I guess a lot of us will be following his performances in the second half of the season, so it's better to open the thread now.

So far this season, he has had 15 appearances, 8 as a starter and 7 as a substitute. With him on the field, Mainz have conceded 10 goals. Unless I'm mistaken, they have conceded 12 goals without him.

Looks like he's also the U-21 captain. Can anyone confirm?

He is.

This has Sammer written all over it. The Badstuber injury might actually be a bit more worrying, as noted by quaazi.
