Isn't he already?

I see van Buyten's number already been taken even though he's technically still on contract. Ironically, van Buyten's father is also called Franz.

Pretty sure both positions are just a symbol of gratitude and respect with no power over anything.

He wore 5 for both Bayern and Germany.
Even 6 for sometime

Let me put it this way... They didn't retire it for Franz, do you honestly think they'll retire it for The Tower?

The only number Bayern has ever 'retired' or doesn't give to players is the 12, for the 12th man (aka the fans). Even club legends like Gerd Muller, Maier, Beckenbauer and Matthaus didnt have their shirt numbers retired.

I don't really get the idea of retiring a shirt number.

It's a cultural thing, though the rational part of me suggests the system is flawed as at some point one will run out of good numbers. People from L.A. will always know that #32 belonged to Magic Johnson though.

apparently he is being questioned about the WC 2018/2022 vote, it is being alleged that he might be involved in some wrong doing [source]

Heh, his answer was "I don't speak English."

Perhaps he should remove all his English tweets though ;) Hopefully there's nothing to this. Bayern can't afford another scandal for its reputation whilst its battling the Hoeness issue.
