Contento is still very young and as long as he wears a Bayern jersey he must accept these things happen and understand he will be an important part of FCB II until he gets another shot at the senior team, which I am sure he will.

He actually has been put back to Bayern II to get playing time

Diego Contento was nominated to play for Germany U21 in the European Championship qualifiers on 9th August against Cyprus. The match will be played in Karlsruhe.

I think he could play as LM as he is fast and has some pretty decent crossing. But as CB that wouldn't be good, because he's too short. He's 1.76m which admittedly is the same height as former Italy international Fabio Cannavaro, but central defenders are generally taller than that, especially so in the Bundesliga, where there is no shortage of tall strikers.

Contento isn't strong either, Cannavaro is/was (is he still playing?). No, this guy shouldn't play outside the wings, though I'm sure he could play fairly well as a LW.

I remember once describing Contento as the opposite of Badstuber. Both can play CB and LB, but one is better as CB and the other as LB.

I think LB is Contento's best position, but he could be used as a LM if necessary.

Does anyone have any idea whether he can play as RB? We keep constantly changing between Boateng and Rafinha, but I think he would be worth a try too. I'm afraid we will at some point lose Contento, because he hasn't been playing at all.

Look at the football since you started to watch him. You have never seen any left-footed full-back how he plays RB, just the opposite(right foot on both sides). The same situation was with midfielders. Today we can see a left-footed winger almost in every team playing on right side, like Messi, Robben, Di Maria, etc. Still, we have seen rarely these examples in the last line. I saw Coentrao against Barca how he played RB very well and it wasn't a big problem. Before him, I saw only Giuseppe Pancaro 6-7 years ago in AC Milan how he had played RB when Cafu was out.

I think in today's, so called modern football, should watch left-footed full-backs and WB on a right side, too. It would take time, but I don't see too much difference between left and right-footed backs. They should be capable to play both sides, left and right back.

I think the reason is that wingers (like Robben) shoot a lot, so playing on the right side would allow them to cut in and have the ball on their preferred foot. Fullbacks cross more than shoot though.

I know, but it seems that left-footed backs don't use right foot at all and right-footed do. :?

From your article:

"In Arteta's case, because he played for Spain in the Under-16 European Championships and then in the Fifa World Championships at Under-17 level, the only way he could satisfy the current criteria is if he held a UK passport at the same time."

Contento has neither played for Germany in a competition nor does he ONLY have a German passport. He had an Italian passport all the time...

Apparently Contento's so bored with not playing that he's found a new hobby... SPRINKLER SURFING!
