Goktan sacked by 1860 Munich for cocaine abuse
Berkant Goktan was sacked with immediate effect by 1860 Munich Tuesday after testing positive for cocaine in a urine test carried out by the German second division club. "It's very sad that we have been forced to take such action," said club CEO Stefan Reuter.
Goktan, who was voted 1860 Munich's player of the season in 2008, apologized to the club and its fans through his lawyers and said his behaviour was a result of a difficult living situation. He added that he intended undergoing therapy in the hope of reviving his career.
1860 Munich said it had offered to help Goktan overcome his problems as well as giving the 27-year-old striker the opportunity of letting his contract lapse, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.
"It's not about Berkant Goktan as a player but as a person now. We hope that he gets his life back under control," said Reuter.
Goktan, who joined 1860 Munich in August 2006 on a five-year deal, previously had spells with Kaiserslautern, Besiktas, Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.
Last season, Goktan netted 10 times for 1860 Munich a became a firm favourite with the fans.
At the beginning of June, Goktan had to undergo an operation after stepping barefoot on broken glass. He returned to training at the end of August but failed to make an appearance this season.
