Yup! Its exactly as you stated it, maybe you don't get to watch enough football matches but its kinda surprising you didn't know that.

The bold section is actually an offside.

As for the winning goal, it wasn't an offside because Gerrard intentionally headed the ball which went the wrong way. It's like giving a back pass.

Technically any deflection of the opposing defender which lands to the offside offensive player makes that player onside.

A deflection => offside
A pass => onside

Gerrard's was a pass because he intentionally went to head the ball. It simply went the wrong way. A back pass it was.

On ESPN Ballack just said that no one on the English national team could play for the Germans. Context being everything, I assume he was referring to the starting XI

I think we would definitely take Leighton Baines and probably Rooney too

Rooney won't get a place in this German squad. Baines might do, but if Durm continues his development he probably won't. Can't really argue with Ballack on that. Our squad isn't full with world-class players but they could and should be performing better. The defence was horrendous, how could you leave a player like Suarez with so much space? Baffling.

I won't even attempt to review the game, still feeling a bit dejected.

Anyway, Japan look like they won't make it out of the groups either. Absolutely ridiculous. I've no idea what's happening there, they were very impressive going into the WC and now they can't find the back of the net. Really wanted them to do well.

I thought deflections can keep one onside as well?

I think Suarez was onside when Muslera originally kicked and then it never touched another Uruguay player before him.

I didn't watch Japan today. Kagawa was not in the starting line up, correct? Did he come on as a sub?

Pfft, I called them losing to Holland and drawing with Chile and not making it as a result.

To be fair, Messi only scored one more goal.
