To be honest, i wouldn't mind Germany winning that way... And it's not like Portugal won on a controversial decision... Congrats to them...

I wouldn't have given them a slight chance after the first round and was even making fun of them...

same here. I remember watching Por v Aus in a bar and I cheered like a boy when Penaldo missed the pen. I thought that they were going home sooner or later.

Taken from a Ronay article on the Euro:

Some will say the playing field has been levelled by a dwindling of interest and intensity elsewhere. International football is in a state of managed decline as the big money club game continues to drain the vim out of every other competition. Many of the star players in France looked tired, or rather a little down on the compelling levels of mid-summer commitment we might have seen in the past. Pedro quickly clarified after seeming to say that turning up in France to play a minor role for Spain was “not worth” it for a man of his status. No doubt he didn’t quite mean that. But there is a trace of something here.
. . .
Although this is perhaps not the best control group given the caution and occasional mediocrity on show. More than half the teams managed less than a goal a game. Nobody played genuinely captivating football. Nobody unveiled anything new. Even in Brazil two years ago there was Chile’s outstanding counter-attack, muscular little men with tattoos and mohawks storming forward in packs, and Holland’s glorious second-half long-ball destruction of Spain.

All domestic comp should reduce the teams ... 16 teams max

Germany can't use excuses since they have the best domestic model - 18 clubs, 34 matchdays, one elimination match in DFB Pokal and the German Super Cup(also one match) unlike in Spain and especially England where they play 2 cups.

Still, big money has been eating football over the last 10-15 years and there's nothing you can do about it. Euro should have ended some 10 days ago but Platini's Euro made it impossible.

This Euro got the champs it (and by "it", I mean UEFA/FIFA) deserves! Try to squeeze in another 15 matches, won't you? So that the "npos" (ri-di-cu-lous!!!) can make another billion, huh? And the pros are even more tired and the games get even more shit - if possible...! Go on and destroy this sport!
Thanks for nothing, :pep: !!

Do you really think it makes such a difference? There were a lot more games in total but teams only played one more than usual.

UEFA EURO 2016

Postby #12 » Thu Jul 14, 2016 1:19 pm

I do... Take Müller... Obviously overplayed, thus sucking at the Euros... CL got reduced and what do the **** do? Scramble in another few games in the same timeslots...

Not talking about the tournament per se but the calendar...

At first that was my reasoning but then you get to see both Ronaldo and Griezmann still going on until the very end after they were also there until the CL final.

Yet they didn't have a Pep as a coach so most probably we will also need to factor in fatigue induced by only-god-knows how many ours of his special training sessions. Remember the Winter break ? when they used to return in worse shape than they started it and the 'injured in training'. After all Alaba and Lewandowsk also looked out of form.
