The Chelsea players will press hard and aggressively from the kick-off, hoping to keep Bayern from controlling the game at all costs, and hoping to grab an early goal. In time, Bayern should master the early onslaught, gradually taking control of the game, and Chelsea can’t keep up that tempo for 90 min (maybe 120 min), so they will then recoil to a park-the-bus formation, hoping for a successful counterattack. Indeed, cards, penalties and injuries are more likely than average. I don’t expect it to be a memorable classic. That is a pity, because Mourinho has the players to win games with more attractive football, and it is an admission of technical inferiority tonight to play in that way, but it might scrape the result against a Bayern who are still trying to get up to speed. My prediction? If Bayern aren’t wasteful up front, they’ll get enough chances to win it.
As an aside, one point worth watching is Bayern’s wing play crossing and game. Elsewhere, I’ve heard people claim that Guardiola is neglecting last season’s successful wing play and crossing game, and his play through the centre isn’t working. Tonight is a night when an overemphasis on crosses might not bring much against defenders of the height, build and calibre of Terry, Ivanovic, etc. Success will lie in a varied attack – and Guardiola is a mastermind for that.
