2011 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship

Postby MUTU » Tue May 03, 2011 6:24 pm

The first matches of the Euro U17 have been played, and Germany U17 just lost 2-0 to Netherlands U17.

UEFA.com wrote:Karim Rekik and Kyle Ebecilio scored second-half goals to give the Netherlands victory in their UEFA European Under-17 Championship Group B opener.

In the 2009 final, and indeed the group stage, Germany had beaten their neighbours. It was a different story today, however, not least thanks to a fine performance from Rekik and, in particular, his central defensive partner Terence Kongolo. Germany, who won every qualifier, were perhaps missing top scorer Samed Yesil, suspended along with defender Koray Günter.

The opening was cagy, though with some promising runs down the Netherlands left from recent AFC Ajax signing Nick de Bondt, yet it was Dutch goalkeeper Boy de Jong who made the first save, tipping over a venomous Okan Aydin strike.

With a strong wind at their backs Germany began to have the better of things, winger Aydin beating several defenders with a dribble down the middle but shooting over. Cimo Röcker came forward to make De Jong work and De Bondt tested Germany goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos from distance, but neither central defence gave anything away before the break.

Perhaps it was appropriate then that a centre-back broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half. Tonny Trindade de Vilhena, having combined well with De Bondt to win a corner, sent in a deep set piece which was headed in at the far post by Rekik.

Germany coach Steffen Freund introduced Fabian Schnellhardt and Erich Berko to try and change the game and the first of those was not far away with a low shot. However, the Netherlands broke and Anass Achabar chipped over following a fine move.

Kongolo and Rekik continued to keep things tight and with four minutes left Achahbar slipped through Ebecilio, who missed the whole of the elite round, to turn in the clincher. The Netherlands will be through with a Friday win against Romania in Belgrade while Germany return here to play the Czech Republic.

Yes. Two players:

1) Emre Can, who is the captain and plays in midfield
2) Patrick Weihrauch, an attacker.

Both played the full 90 mins in this match.

I watched Germany's game today and was impressed by Emre Can. He seemed a much more mature and well rounded player than most of the others on the pitch. He plays for our U19s at the moment but maybe with the relegation of the reserve team and the complete player restructuring he'll get promoted at some point.

good thing they finally won
I watched part of the match vs czech republic and Germany were dominating so bad but Czech scored.
Now they'll have to play denmark in the knockout phase i think.

I wasn't following the results so here's a small compilation (some info has already been mentioned up above, so please excuse me for repetition, it's a summary of all events).

There were 3 group stages so far. The first 2 group stages were qualifiers.

1st qualifying stage (more info on Wikipedia):
Germany 5 - 0 Estonia
Bosnia and Herzegovina 1 - 6 Germany
Germany 2 - 1 Austria

2nd qualifying stage, also referred to as the elite round (more info on Wikipedia):
Germany 2 - 0 Turkey
Germany 2 - 0 Ukraine
Switzerland 0 - 2 Germany

Now the proper competition, split into 2 groups:

Germany 0 – 2 Netherlands (Rekik 50' and Ebecilio 76' scored for Netherlands)
Germany (Yesil 80') 1 – 1 Czech Republic (Juliš 12' opened the score for Czech Republic and Yesil scored the equalizer in 80')
Romania 0 – 1 Germany (Yesil 42' was the hero once again for Germany)

Germany were lucky to progress from their group with a loss, draw and a win (and negative goal difference).

The semifinal is today in 30 mins' time (16:30, CET), Germany vs Denmark.

The winner will play Netherlands, who were Germany's first opponent in the last group stage and the only team that managed to beat Germany and keep a clean sheet as well. Incidentally though, Germany played them without their top scorer, Samed Yeşil.

Some notes about Samed Yeşil. He scored 0 goals against Estonia (he only played 21 mins though), 3 goals against Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2 against Austria, 1 goal against Turkey, 1 goal against Ukraine, 1 goal against Switzerland, 0 goals against Netherlands (he did not play in this match), 1 goal against Czech Republic and 1 goal against Romania. He's currently 16 years old and he plays for Bayer Leverkusen. He holds a German and Turkish passport, so let's hope that Germany manage to hold on to this talent. More info on this player:

Not long to go, but here's an english stream of the game.

Uefa credits Can with the goal, but he didn't even take the shot, he was disrupting the wall. AND it was an own goal from a danish defender.

Hilarious. Germany has got two goals from set pieces, one own goal, the other an offensive handball. :D

Can takes a brilliant shot in the last minute, goalie barely parries it into the crossbar. Can looks like a pretty good player, smart and strong, kinda lazy or lacking stamina though, because he didn't run as much in the last 10 minutes as earlier.
The ideal team

UEFA.com credits Ayhan 58' and Quaschner 70'

It's full time now (the length of the matches is 80 mins). Germany U17 are through to the final against Netherlands.
The reason why Yesil (the top scorer) didn't score was that he did not play (I think he was suspended).

By the way, when's the final gonna be? This game looked surprisingly interesting.

Germany didn't even look like threatening the Danes outside of set pieces (and Can's heck of a volley). I hope that Yesil guy is as good as you say.

that yesil guy made the winning goal to get germany through and he also made the equaliser in the 2nd match, although he had just missed a penalty a few minutes before that.

i watched most of the match as it was broadcasted on the TV at my gym. In all honesty Denmark were the better team especcially earlier in the match. Germany weren't strong at all and that second goal would have been intersepted (the cross) if there was a decent goalkeeper. Germany was lucky he stayed on his line.

All in all, Germany are lucky to be in the final.
