Stars in the gym for Monday fitness workout

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Apr 04, 2011 7:40 pm

April is a month of contrasting weather in northern Europe, and Munich is no exception at the moment. On Saturday, the sun beat down, the air temperature soared, and the players sweated profusely during Bayern's 1-0 win over Monchengladbach at the Allianz Arena, but Monday was chilly, wet and miserable. To minimise the risk of colds and flu, Louis van Gaal opted at short notice to hold training indoors.

It was a welcome change for the players as they trooped into the on-site sports hall at the Säbener Strasse. After a 20-minute warm-up, fitness coach Marcelo Martins took charge, with a series of exercises to improve pace off the mark and coordination. The pros sprinted and leaped their way across the hall, on one leg, forwards, sideways, and backwards. "The idea today was to work on our fitness and conditioning, not with the ball. It's better to do that indoors than on the slippery turf," Bastian Schweinsteiger explained to FCB.tv.

Far from being bored or disgruntled, the mood among the players could hardly have been better, as Schweinsteiger confirmed: "Everyone's in good spirits. We didn't play well against Gladbach, but we won. We can be proud of that." Luiz Gustavo was among those enjoying himself: "It was very hard work at first, but we were really having fun at the end."

Thomas Müller was in joking mood as he anchored an elastic rope, straining against the power of super sprinter Arjen Robben: "I've just found out how fast he really is," the Germany man quipped, raining a laugh among his team-mates. Franck Ribéry amused himself and his fellow stars with a set of cramped pull-ups on the crossbar of a handball goal frame.

To round off the 75-minute workout, the footballers were transformed into basketball players. Team Germany featuring captain Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber, Andreas Ottl, Toni Kroos, Schweinsteiger and Müller, took on the Best of the Rest including Ribéry and Robben, initially in a lay-up contest, and then in a six-a-side match with two baskets. As it turned out, the Germans were soundly beaten, the exceptionally skilled Hamit Altintop leading the Rest to victory. Van Gaal cheered and applauded his men's efforts time and again.

A smiling Schweinsteiger pinpointed the reasons behind the defeat: "We've basically come here with the complete Germany national team, but we've lost because Thomas Müller was too selfish. He just wanted to score points for himself."

Haha what a tongue-in-cheek comment from the usual Schweinsteiger :) He's obviously sarcastically referring to the on-field fight between Müller and Robben.
