Robben retires from international football

Postby FCBayernNews » Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:05 am

Arjen Robben has ended his international career with the Netherlands. The FCB pro announced his retirement after Holland failed to qualify for the World Cup finals on Tuesday night. "I play for a top club in Europe and now I want to focus completely on Bayern," said the 33-year-old, who scored both goals in the 2-0 win against Sweden

Robben received a great response from the fans in Amsterdam in his final match for his country. The wizard on the wing for the German record champions said he "really enjoyed" playing on that stage. After the game he said farewell to the fans accompanied by his children and before kick-off he had a tear in his eye during the national anthem.

Robben explained he was aware "it was the final time today." In 14 years he played 96 times for the Netherlands scoring 37 goals. He took part in six tournaments and captained the side recently. The high point was the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when Robben led the Oranje to the final. Holland just missed out in a 1-0 defeat against Spain in extra time.
