Nerlinger expects 'same answer as last time'

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Jan 22, 2012 6:20 pm

The squad had the day off on Sunday, but even on a day of rest, the stars will almost certainly have been thinking about football, still musing on Friday night's defeat in Mönchengladbach. "We're not yet where we have to be," Arjen Robben noted immediately after the final whistle at Borussia Park. "As we've seen, we still have work to do," agreed Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The players next report for training at 3 pm on Monday afternoon, when Jupp Heynckes and his staff will begin preparing the players for a return to winning ways against Wolfsburg next Saturday. Friday's match stats give a strong indication of the areas capable of improvement. FCB dominated open play against Gladbach, with 64 percent of the possession, an 18-9 win in the shot count and 8-4 on corners, and 24 crosses to the home side's two. However, Munich finished with only one goal, and only won 43 percent of their tackles, pointing up a lack of aggression, commitment and determination.

"We'll sit down and analyse the game. We won't be knocked out of our stride. We're still top of the league," declared Toni Kroos, "we'll bounce back next week and win our home game." Manuel Neuer took a similar stance: "I'm certain we'll see a very different performance."

The players were self-critical but reasoned, and burning to make amends in the aftermath of the defeat to Gladbach. It was not the start to the second half of the campaign anyone wanted, but it is certainly no reason to panic. "I remember very well indeed how a debate flared up after we lost the first game of the season. There was a real song and dance - and it'll happen again this time," noted Christian Nerlinger. The director of sport is confident FCB can nip the critical broadside in the bud. "Once we're out on the field, we'll give the same answer as last summer."
