Müller: We just want to enjoy ourselves again

Postby FCBayernNews » Wed May 03, 2017 4:05 pm

The season is drawing to a close. After cruising to the title in Wolfsburg last Saturday, FC Bayern want to play freely without pressure in their remaining three Bundesliga games and delight their supporters. “We just want to enjoy ourselves again. We have two home games left and we want to do something for our fans and put on a good show in them,” said Thomas Müller on Wednesday before the champion’s first training session since sealing the title.

On Saturday FCB host relegation-threatened Darmstadt 98 at the Allianz Arena, with Freiburg visiting Munich on the final day of the season. In between that they face their nearest challengers Leipzig, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side “want to show them we’re number one in Germany.”

Second most assists in the league

With 11 assists this season, Müller is second in the Bundesliga assists chart behind Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg on 15. The 27 year-old has provided a total of 71 assists since his Bundesliga debut in August 2008. Only his teammate Franck Ribéry has set up more goals during that time (82), but the native Bavarian is not overly interested in such statistics.

“Of course I’ll be trying to give my all in the next few games. Setting up and scoring goals are my main duties, there’s no denying that. But it wouldn’t mean anything to me to be the best assist provider. Football is a day-to-day business and I’ve never heard a song being sung for the player with the most assists,” said the 2014 World Cup winner in typically cheeky fashion.

100-goal mark in sight

On the subject of scoring goals, the attacking all-rounder has netted five this season. And even if that’s significantly lower than in previous years (“if you set the bar high, you’ll be judged against that”), Müller can still achieve something special between now and the end of the season by becoming only the fifth Bayern player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals.

He’s currently fifth in the list of FCB’s all-time goalscorers with 96 goals, behind Gerd Müller (365), CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (162), Roland Wohlfahrt (119) and Dieter Hoeneß (102). With three games left of the current season, Müller still has time to join the illustrious 100 club. He does however possess one record that no other player has achieved: in the 75 Bundesliga games in which he’s scored, Müller has never lost.
