Germany midfielder extends stay until 2012

Postby FCBayernNews » Mon Dec 15, 2008 2:00 pm

Bastian Schweinsteiger has committed the next three years of his career to Bayern. The 24-year-old inked a three-year contract extension at the weekend, binding him to the Munich club until 30 June 2012. Schweinsteiger's current deal was set to expire at the end of this season.

"We're delighted we've reached a positive conclusion with Bastian, another very important personality at the club," FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge commented after securing the Germany international's signature. The Bayern youth product has been linked with a long list of top European clubs recently.

Nevertheless, Schweinsteiger has repeatedly said in recent months he would be talking to Bayern before any other clubs. After what Rummenigge described as "very amiable and fair" talks, the parties have agreed a deal on the eve of the Bundesliga's winter break.

Schweinsteiger joined Bayern's junior team youth section in 1998, making his senior debut in a 3-3 Champions League draw with RC Lens in November 2002. He has subsequently made 168 Bundesliga, 22 DFB Cup and 44 European appearances for Munich. Despite his relatively young 24 years, he also rates as one of Germany's most experienced current internationals with a total of 62 senior caps.

With Bayern, Schweinsteiger has won the German domestic double four times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2008). He was a member of the Germany team which finished runners-up at Euro 2008, and third at the 2006 World Cup.

The talented midfielder has been a regular in the side since Jürgen Klinsmann took the reins last June, appearing in 23 of Munich's 25 matches this term and starting 22 of them. He has scored four goals, three in the Bundesliga and one in the Champions League. He will now aim to add to his medal collection with Bayern over the next three and a half years.
