FCB's efforts in vain as Bayer filch the points

Postby FCBayernNews » Sun Oct 28, 2012 7:40 pm

Bayern dropped points in the Bundesliga for the first time this season on Sunday, as visiting Bayer Leverkusen ended a 23-year barren run in the Bavarian capital with a fortunate 2-1 victory over Jupp Heynckes' men, who dominated the play but hit the woodwork twice and ran out of luck in front of goal.

The 71,000 who braved the snow and freezing chill to fill the Allianz Arena to capacity saw the men in red dominate the first period and create a string of presentable openings, but the visitors took a flattering lead through Stefan Kießling three minutes before the break.

Xherdan Shaqiri appeared for the second half and was soon in the thick of the action as Munich laid siege to the Leverkusen goal, with Arjen Robben and Claudio Pizarro also entering the fray. Pizza made an immediate impact with the cross for Mario Mandzukic to level on 77 minutes, but Bayer sub Sidney Sam stole a second goal for his side three minutes from time with a header which took a wicked deflection off Jerome Boateng.

The result means Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga on 24 points from their nine games, four ahead of new second-placed team Schalke and five clear of Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bavarians are next in action on Wednesday at home to second-tier Kaiserslautern in the second round of the DFB Cup.

Franck Ribery and Javi Martinez both picked up knocks against Lille in the Champions League, so Heynckes made two enforced changes to the team which beat the Ligue 1 side 1-0 away from home last Tuesday, with David Alaba making a first start of term out on the left, and Luiz Gustavo taking over from Martinez. On the bench, Robben returned to the squad for the first time in four weeks.

The FCB line-up thus comprised Neuer in goal behind the regular back four of Holger Badstuber, Jerome Boateng, Dante and captain Philipp Lahm, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Gustavo anchoring the midfield, Thomas Müller on the opposite flank to Alaba, Toni Kroos in the hole, and Mario Mandzukic as the target man.

Leverkusen's coaching team of Sascha Lewandowski and Sami Hypia, whose side arrived in Munich on an eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions, opted for a defensive 4-5-1 formation in an attempt to stifle the home side's midfield creativity, with Germany internationals Lars Bender and Simon Rolfes in destructive central roles and Kießling on his own up front.

Once referee Florian Meyer whistled play underway on an unseasonably cold evening, with light snowfall and the temperature barely above freezing, the match set off at a brisk pace with the visitors seeking to do more than merely park the bus, but the bulk of the early chances fell to the fluid and inventive home team.

In the second minute, Schweinsteiger's glorious back-heeled flick bobbled agonisingly wide of the far stick, before Stefan Reinartz just about stopped a mazy Alaba raid, and Bayer keeper Bernd Leno made a good reaction save to block Mandzukic's header from a Badstuber cross. Alaba guided a header wide of the target and was then crowded out after thrusting into the box, before Lahm and Müller both shot too high.

Bayer stuck to the task and threatened for the first time with the half-hour approaching. Philipp Wollscheid had the ball in the net but referee Meyer had already blown for a foul, before Neuer was forced to punch a Daniel Carvajal cross off Kießling's head. FCB stormed back and Leno pushed away a Kroos lob after a slick exchange between Badstuber and Müller, before the keeper rode his luck a trifle with a scrambled save from Schweinsteiger's rifled drive.

Heynckes' men were dominant, but the visitors took the lead against the run of play on 42 minutes with an all-Germany international production. Rolfes fed Andre Schürrle down the right, the winger's cut-back evading Lahm and trickling over the line off Kießling's shin to hand Bayer a flattering half-time lead.

Shaqiri replaced Badstuber at the break, with Alaba dropping to full back and the Swiss star moving into midfield. The sub fashioned the first chance after the restart, but Kroos' first shot was deflected wide and a second was blocked by Gonzalo Castro, before Leno tipped a Boateng piledriver round the post.

Heynckes made a second and this time enforced substitution before the hour, Gustavo limping out to be replaced by Robben. The lively Shaqiri brought a fine diving save out of Leno and was then booked for alleged diving in the box, and Lahm twice darted down the right to cause havoc, before FCB went for broke by sending on Pizarro for Schweinsteiger a quarter-hour from time.

Leverkusen sporadically threatened on the break and Neuer saved well from Schürrle, but the breakthrough for Bayern finally arrived after 77 minutes when Pizarro twisted in the box and crossed for Mandzukic to head the equaliser.

The Croat then saw an inadvertent deflection hit the base of the post in the frantic closing stages, before the shock of Bayer's second goal three minutes from time when substitute Sam headed Castro's cross against Boateng and the ball skidded into the corner of the net. Leno saved from Alaba and Pizza's header from the storming Neuer's cross looped onto the crossbar as FCB sought to salvage the draw, but it was sadly not to be on the day.
