Miros Klose: what is his problem?

Postby Jorge on Fri Apr 04, 2008 4:51 pm

I am just wandering about Klose, a very disciplined player with good technical skills, speed and strength. Why is he losing it at Bayern?

He has Luca Toni beside him, very feared so he can draw defenders to open space to Klose's runs, he has excellent midfielders who can send him split passes to these spaces, he is good in the air and he has excellent wingers who can send clinical aerial crosses, so what is the problem?

He started the season in a very high note, at the beginning I thought he was the No.1 striker above Toni, he impressed not only for scoring game after game but for giving passes in "gift wrap" to Luca Toni, then he started fading away.

I have been paying close attention to him in the last few matches and I noticed the following:

1. He has lost mobility, so most of the times the opposite defender know where he is and can predict where he is running next
2. He has lost speed and anticipation: Klose used to be a step ahead of the defenders in most runs and gain an extra step after taking off, now he barely beats an average defender and his shot most of the times goes against a foot standing between himself and the goal.

i think the main issue is confidence, it's seen all the time, if a striker goes a couple of games without a goal, that confidence drops, so the player becomes more withdrawn, possibly not trying that daring run or trying to beat a defender instead just trying to hold up the ball until support arrives... problem is, when that support has arrived, so has the defence, which limits the goalscoring more!

I think people are being a little hard on Klose. There's no question that he was doing better earlier in the season, but strikers always go through relative tough times. Remember Makaay a few seasons ago? He went a LONG time without scoring but no one seemed to question it. At least right now in bad form Miro is still chipping in with a goal here and there. If he only scored one more goal this season but it happened to win the UEFA Cup final there would be no complaints from anyone I'm sure. Besides, look at the numbers. Toni is obviously our #1 striker with 27 goals in all comps. Great. Miro is #2 with "only" 20. ONLY 20?! ANY team in the world would kill to have their second striker chipping in with 20 goals! Most teams are happy if their primary striker gets 20! Maybe not teams of Bayern's stature, but hey, do you really want Pizarro back as our #2 striker? Less than 15-a-season Pizarro? Yeah right, and monkeys might fly out of my butt! That being said, I'm all for Podolski getting some more playing time while Miro finds his shooting boots again. That's good for everyone. But give Miro a break, honestly. He'll be back, just like every other great striker.

FCBinNYC: No one is bashing Klose, I am not even being hypercritic, I am just analyzing why he has lost his rhythm. If he is untouchable, I am sorry but his salary comes from my pocket too when I watch Bayern games, buy their merchandise or promote their team wearing their jersey. The comparison with Makkay and Pizarro is off the bridge

The 20 goals so far this season only prove how good he was at the beginning of the season, on how he slowed down. Only 10 of those are Bundesliga goals, now check how they were scored: 8 out of 10 in the first 6 games of the season, coincidentally he was putting an assist per game at the same time. Since September 26th (that’s more than 6 months ago) he has scored only 2 Bundesliga goals, one against Wolfsburg (Nov. 24) and the most recent one against Schalke on March 1st. At the same time, if you exclude the assist for Toni against Leverkusen 3 weeks ago, you have to go back to October 20th 2007 when he set Ribery for a goal against Bochum.

Last season Klose went into an 8 game goal drought at Werder Bremen and he raised and lot of concerns among his fans, for me one goal and one assist in 12 Bundesliga games AT BAYERN is enough concern and with Podolski threatening to take his spot it is worth a debate here.

I've also wondered recently about Klose's sudden lack of form. It reminds me of last season at Bremen when he had a similar dip (at about the same time of the year) in form and it was blamed on him having his mind at Bayern already...obviously that argument cannot be made currently, but I also remember that for some time he was having a "mysterious" health issue last season that was apparently affecting his form--they later said it was a virus.
I hope he can get back to his old business an play at the level he was playing two years ago when he has unstoppable scoring 25 goals (if I remember correctly) and providing about 15 assists.

Cool Jorge. I'm glad you're not bashing him, but there are people who are. No doubt he was better earlier in the season, and his Bundesliga contribution could be better. But he scored some goals in the Pokal and UEFA Cup since the winter break too, like against Wolfsburg, Anderlecht and Aberdeen. Those are good contributions, he got a nice assist against Wolfsburg too. I'll agree that he's looked anonymous at times, but again I don't know if there's any real explanation besides just being in one of those "striker's funks" that happens from time to time.

No problem FCBinNYC. I like Klose a lot, specially what he does for Germany and I was very happy to see him wearing the red shirt. I am just a little disappointed at his lack of form right now. Let's hope he can pick it up rather sooner than later.

A player cannot have the same level of performance the whole season..

Miro Klose is one of the best strikers in the world, and he maybe could not be in his best level of pérformance, but he always assists Toni, or fight the balls, and he makes a lot of things called the "dirty work"..

Sorry for my english.. If i made some mistake, please correct me, so i can learn more..

thanks

he is not losing it at bayern! if u watched the first half of the season u would know that he was on fire! And scored plenty of goals. he has just been a slump of late all players have there up and downs.
