IN MY OPINION:
The Beatles and the Rolling stones are overrated anyway.
The Beatles - Very good, but also overrated.
Rolling Stones - Boring AND overrated.

The rest are VERY good musicians, in my opinion, but in their own genres.
You're comparing apples with oranges.

Every band I mentioned has a larger fan base

Bieber has a bigger fanbase than a lot of those on there, I guess he's better than them, in turn.

Your shot at reductio ad absurdum has failed because you left out the influenced, sold and won part. If you're going to make fun of what I say, make fun of the whole thing, don't take things out of context.

None of those are still any indication to an artist's creative worth. More their businessmanship, or rather that of their managers.

You may be right regarding the "sold" part, but when modern-day successful and acclaimed bands claim that bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin or Queen influenced them to be what they are, it's difficult to deny their greatness. Also, managers have little to do with bands getting certain awards.

He's also sold a lot, that too, I guess.
Besides, maybe not really "the most amazing", to me they are there or thereabouts among the better of punk musicians.
The oldest is not always the best, but who knows, there IS a study that music is getting louder and more repetitive over time.
Fan base and amount of albums sold is irrelevant, winning something is a lot of times based on popularity more than anything.
Influence? I might give you that one.

That's right; Pink Floyd, who have sold hundreds of millions of albums, inspired hundreds of millions of fans over multiple generations, racked up dozens of awards, including one awarded by the King of Sweden himself, are really just a mediocre band who are popular because they fluked out.

They sold shit, won shit, got fans, and that's all randy dandy and whatnot, I guess.
But I'm just saying those =/= good band.
Bad bands/singers can sell shit, get fans, and even may win something or another here and there.
I'm just saying it doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make you good, is all.

About.com lists to me shit like Foo Fighters and Korn as some of the most successful rock bands. I'd say my point stands.

The thing is that most people don't actually care about music. They want something inoffensive and catchy to listen to on the radio when driving or cooking or whatever. They are marketed appealing sound, not music. Now I don't sound like a hipster, but judging from the stuff that gets constantly posted in this thread, I'd say you guys are still at that level. Not that I'm saying that Deep Purple or Ozzy are bad, but they take absolutely no effort from you to get to know them. Branch out a bit - there is some absolutely marvelous music in the world that only a handful of people have heard about at any given time. Listening to the classics is fun and all but you will never find what truly appeals to you this way.

There are so many things about your argument.
Many correct, many incorrect.
But f.uck it, I'm way too tired right now to list and discuss them all.

That first part is true, but I disagree with the second. Personally, I've gone through everything from the dubstep and techno of Deadmau5 and co to the funk of the 70's to the Gangsta rap of the NWA, Tupac and Biggie to the thrash of Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer, Sodom to the whatever-the-hell-that-is of Body Count and beyond. While these things are all entertaining and intriguing, in the end, there's a reason I like and listen to the bands that I do, and it's most definitely narrow mindedness.

See those are all artists I know. I'm not talking about genres here - it's okay to not delve into a genre if you really can't stand the aesthetics, for example (though some genrewhores would argue with me, well, rather HAVE argued with me, good times). I'm talking about constantly finding something new that improves on the old. I for one refuse to believe that the apex of musical development was reached in the 70s. I think it hasn't been reached at all.

Oh, I forgot to add my actual point re: this thread. Don't post stuff that other people know. Post something that you're fairly certain that if you brought it up in a conversation with random people, the name would only result in blank expressions in their eyes. Challenge people's tastes with the freakiest shit you can. If at least one person listens to that link you give and thinks: "yeah, this is some good stuff right here, maybe I should look into it", then it'll be worth it.

I'll have to agree with BayernLove on the Sales/Fanbase point, for reasons he and Quaazi listed. (Mainstream music being made up of marketed sound, shitty artists being incredibly successful etc.)Now on the Offspring, I wouldn't say that they're part of the greatest bands of all time. Not because they're bad or anything, it's just that it's hard to see things as they really are when they're so close ( Time-wise, that is, and yes, the late 90s are close music wise, don't go all "OMAGAWD CALL ME MAYBE IS SO LAST SUMMER" on me). I bet nobody considered Zeppelin the best band of ALL-TIME back in the 70s. Best band in the world is more probable, but still a little iffy. I'm not saying Assef's wrong, I myself am not exactly fond of the offspring, I'm just saying that you need a bigger timeframe to be able to give such a judgement. 30 years from now, the Offspring could be considered a groundbreaking band( God Forbid), but right now is too early to tell.

Ugh, Opeth. Can one get any more pretentious?

Though I do like this piece, even if the whole "scary" part felt overdone.
