Coconut Grove in Paceville will be holding its farewell party on September 24 as the rock music club shutters up after 30 years. Kurt Sansone asks whether this is the last nail in the coffin of diversity for the entertainment mecca.
Coconut Grove had already closed its doors once, 20 years ago when it moved out of its landmark location in Paceville to be replaced by Burger King.
It was 1995 and it had been in existence for a decade. Many in their 40s today have fond memories of the Last Bash party that bid farewell to the place in the middle of Paceville – it re-opened just down the road. [source]

Malta has featured first in a list of 25 "travel secrets" published in Lonely Planet Magazine's fall 2016 issue.
The two-page magazine article describes Valletta as "among Europe's most beautiful capitals" and highlights Gozo as being "home to some of EUrope's best scuba diving."
Malta features first in the magazine's '25 Travel Secrets' cover story.

Malta's feature was written by Abigail Blasi, who also authored Lonely Planet's guide to Malta and Gozo.
Malta Tourism Authority CEO Paul Bugeja was delighted with the coverage, saying that a two-page advert in the magazine would have cost €130,500.
Lonely Planet Magazine, which is designed exclusively with North American readers in mind, has a readership of 1.35 million. It is published every quarter.
Lonely Planet is the world's largest travel guide book publisher, having sold more than 120 million books and 11 million copies of its travel apps. It is owned by NC2 Media. [source]

A tram is useless and won't solve anything, only make matters worse.

Today I had the worst traffic jam I've ever experienced in the evening rush hour. Mornings are of course always bad.
We will rise again! (when we stop burying our heads in the sand)

the problem is that the population increased a lot thanks to all the foreigners who chose Malta to be their new home.
We are going to implode... In two three years time everyone will be depressed to death

Passenger cars are outpacing population growth and will seriously threaten economic production in 10 years’ time as major arterial thoroughfares are stretched beyond the breaking point, a report has warned.
Moreover, rush hour traffic flows, which have increased by 55 per cent since 1990, could soar by a further 12.8 per cent by 2025.
The stern warning was made on the strength of a thorough analysis carried out as part of a transport master plan, which has just been published for public consultation.
According to the study, traffic between 7.30am and 8.30am accounts for 11 per cent of the daily total and is mostly work- or education-related. It notes that a direct comparison between vehicle ownership growth and demographic trends indicated that the number of passenger cars has been increasing at a rate exceeding population growth. [source]

Heritage Malta will be highlighting popular traditions and beliefs in souls and the afterlife, through l-Għid tal-Erwieħ at the Inquisitor’s Palace on November 4.
This event includes a traditional supper and the possibility of a sleep-over in the palace’s 17th-century prison cells.
Theatrical representations of the newwieħa (hired-mourners) will set the scene for the traditional meal based on the ħanżira tal-erwieħ. Its name originates from the local All Souls’ Day custom where the Maltese feasted on a pig let loose on the streets with a bell hanging around its neck. Entire neighbourhoods would feed it, and on the day cook it to feed the poor. The roasted pig is the main dish in this thematic supper. This will be complimented by the maħluta, a bittersweet drink recalling the ups and downs in life, ftieti tal-għaża (toasted bread with garlic and parsley), kawlata (vegetable soup with pork), and l-għadam tal-mejtin a bone shaped almond-based sweet.
Apart from following coffins with outcries in funeral processions, the newwieħa used to go into mourners’ houses and break some pottery items or turn pots upside down because people were not meant to cook following the passing away of a relative.
A literary work written by Immanuel Mifsud will help participants reflect and set the scene before calling it a night. Those wishing to sleep over need their own sleeping bags and torches.
L-Għid tal-Erwieħ will be held in Maltese and is suggested for a mature audience.
Tickets, at €30 and €28 for HM members, are available from Heritage Malta sites and museums or online. [source]
