I'm told that one of the main reasons behind WW1 was simply the big countries wanting to test out new weapons. The assassination was more of an excuse

To list the assassination of Ferdinand as a casus beli and not just an excuse is irrational at least - or many more wars should have happened. Many events preceding greatly impacted the situation, like the annexation of Bosnia and creation of blocks, just to give a few examples.

To put things in simple terms, the great central powers were not completely satisfied with their share of power. For Austria, in a situation where Ottomans are severely weakened, obtaining land from new Balkan states was a great opportunity and a strategic interest. After Bosnia, Serbia was next on the way and they needed valid, strong reasoning to try securing that other powers are to remain indifferent - assassination was welcomed in that aspect, but still a rather poor excuse and they knew it. So, with German support, Austria-Hungary started blaming Serbian government for assassination and presented them with a humiliating ultimatum, designed to be rejected. And so it was.

If anyone is interested and likes podcast, I HIGHLY recommend Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - Blueprint for Armageddon series. Excellent summary of the lead up and cause to WW1, as well as the entire war and aftermath.

The Raid of Żejtun (Maltese: L-Aħħar Ħbit – The Last Attack) was the last major attack made by the Ottoman Empire against the island of Malta, which was then ruled by the Order of St. John. The attack took place in July 1614, when raiders pillaged the town of Żejtun and the surrounding area before being beaten back to their ships by the Order's cavalry and by the inhabitants of the south-eastern towns and villages [source]

734 Years Ago.....
The Battle of Malta took place on 8 July[n 1] 1283 in the entrance to the Grand Harbour, the principal harbour of Malta, as part of the War of the Sicilian Vespers. An Aragonese fleet of galleys, commanded by Roger of Lauria, attacked and defeated a fleet of Angevin galleys commanded by Guillaume Cornut and Bartholomé Bonvin.[2][3]

The Angevin ships arrived in Malta first, and proceeded to relieve the Angevin garrison, which was besieged within the walls of the Castello del Mare. The galleys were followed in close pursuit by an Aragonese fleet. Roger of Lauria easily out-maneuvered the Angevin-Provençal fleet, and destroyed almost all of Cornut and Bonvin's vessels.[4] Lauria then sailed back northwards, making a demonstration off Naples, raided the neighbouring coast, attacked and then garrisoned Capri and Ischia.[4] The crushing defeat forced Charles I of Naples to postpone his plan to invade Sicily.

I mean what do you expect to be better? A German when his nation has just scored a world cup winner or an English commentator, who usually detest the Germans? :P
