On this day in 2007, Maltese all-time top scorer Michael Mifsud scored two goals at Old Trafford in Coventry City's 2-0 win over Manchester United, eliminating the latter from the League Cup. :D

I remember the game clearly. We had gone out for dinner and I was bored so I focused entirely on the game. I was quite surprised to learn that pretty much every Maltese person had either watched it or seen highlights by the following morning. :P

and what about that back heel which ended hitting the post? He could have scored a famous hattrick.
What a shame, :x was it not for his greediness he could have gone to play it in the Premier division... [-X

By the way tonight we lost to Pembroke ; I know it is ot but since we are talking about Mlt football...
Two defeats against teams which had no points prior to the win against us... what a joke

It feels more set up than ever to me this year. At least we managed to take another 3 points this weekend.

On today's day 14 years ago Croatian, DInamo Zagreb and AC Milan legend Zvonimir Boban retired. A great farewell was in Zagreb. :)

On October 7, 1994, world champion Franz Beckenbauer became the new president of FC Bayern Munich. In this position, he was able to celebrate eight championships, six DFB Cup, and the 2001 UEFA Champions League. Since 2009 Der Kaiser has been the honorary president.

The Battle of Lepanto took place on October 7, 1571 when a galley fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of the Republic of Venice, the Papacy (under Pope Pius V), Spain (including Naples, Sicily and Sardinia), the Republic of Genoa, the Duchy of Savoy, the Knights Hospitaller and the Habsburgs, decisively defeated the main fleet of Ottoman war galleys. The battle was a response to the Ottoman seizure of Cyprus from Venice a few months earlier. The five-hour battle was fought at the northern edge of the Gulf of Patras, off western Greece, where the Ottoman forces sailing westwards from their naval station in Lepanto met the Holy League forces, which had come from Messina. Victory gave the Holy League temporary control over the Mediterranean, protected Rome from invasion, and prevented the Ottomans from advancing into Europe.

This last major naval battle fought solely between rowing vessels was one of history's most decisive, ending Ottoman sea-power as well assuring European ascendancy vis-a-vis the Ottoman Empire.

Interesting fact: One of the greatest Spanish writers Miguel de Cervantes fought and lost the use of an arm in this battle and therefore he is known as el manco de Lepanto (the one-armed man of Lepanto) in the Hispanic world.

18.10.1964: Gerd Müller makes his debut for Bayern. In his first game (11: 2 victory against Freiburger FC), our striker legend scored his first goal. To date, the "Bomber der Nation" is the most successful scorer in Bundesliga history. Unforgettable!
