According to my friend who knows a friend who is very much into WW1, a big part of the reason the war happened is that a bunch of countries were developing new advanced weapons and wanted to test them. I was told this when I came across it in a video and thought it was a joke but this friend told me she'd heard it from a reliable source. Does anyone know more about this?

The reason was mainly Bismarck having jumped ship and Wilhelm dealing with his inferiority complex... It would not have become a world war if it weren't for the German blank check for the Austrians in the first place - and the subsequent war entrance triggering several alliances...

Has anyone listened to Hardcore History's Blueprint for Armageddon? Really great (and long) podcast miniseries about WW1

I understand that it's a sensitive topic in your country but the causes of WWI are much more deeper than a mere "complex of inferiority" or whatever.
Do they talk about the Bagdadbahn's project in your history books for instance ? A railway linking Berlin to Bagdad that would have created a major menace to British dominance over the world, as it would have given Germany direct access to oil.

2 WWs were written by UK, Russia + USA... Germany is their bitch now. WW1 was different from WW2... and I side with Austria-Hungary there, I'm glad that there was an Austria-Hungary to oppose the UK and Russia, too bad that they weren't successful for long.

That inferiority complex was nothing but a personal note and touch, please don't misconstrue this as general fact taught here

Ramsej, please, it's getting really exhausting to fight all these misconceptions... You have a completely wrong image of Germany... Please come again and see for yourself...
And... If the only way to convince you from the opposite is hate you might just get what you want

BTT: I know of the issues... The thing is: the final escalation was not influenced by many factors... Germany willingly became the main reason fir that outbreak... Not saying that it wasn't in an extremely heated atmosphere, or that it might've happened later and differently if it weren't for the German actions - but that's just a given...
However, post WWI and pre WWII appeasement policy is a sign of acknowledgement of this...
The passage in the Versailles Treaty was just added to justify the enormous reparations and restrictions anyway...
Post WWII cooperation shows us how it's done! When Germans were not treated as enemies, but future allies...

Oh and Janker, not like we wouldn't be their bitches anyway (which btw I don't feel like anyway...)
If anything, Britain is more of a US bitch than anybody else... And weren't you just proclaiming "British independence" from the "EU dictatorship"? The very EU that is frequently criticized for being a "Merkel dictatorship" - well if all that is the case the question is: who is whose bitch? ;)
I think these both wars cost Europe an even bigger predominant position in world economy...
Thanks for nothing, :pep: !!

if I remember correctly here I have to agree with #12 Wilhelm II was the one who wanted it with all his heart...
The exploitation of Africa was another reason, right?
And one has to remember that Wilhelm was fighting his cousin George V of England !!!

African colonies were a factor... (partly why I spoke of inferiority) and overall it was just a little game of the powerful, underestimating the course and brutality a modern war could take...

You think that's big? Ireland remained neutral in WW2 so George VI was both at war and at peace with Nazi Germany. In 1947, he was at war with himself in the Indo-Pakistani war.

never heard of this ... the train was Munich bound...
The Italicus Express massacre (Italian: Strage del treno Italicus) was a terrorist bombing in Italy on a train of the public rail network. During the early hours of 4 August 1974, the bomb attack killed 12 people and wounded 48. Responsibility was claimed by the neo-fascist terrorist organization Ordine Nero [source]
