TIL that Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, believed that during the priest's sermon in mass, children should be allowed to read for pleasure, because at their age they would find the sermon too boring and it would push them away from the Church.

I can't link a source to this because I found it in an introduction to a collection of his works.

Today I learned that San Marino is the oldest surviving Republic in the World.
It is a Rep since 301 A.D

It's founder was San Marino who arrived there from Croatia after escaping persecution...

It's independence was threatened by Napoleon but the latter (who befriended the Leaders of S.Marino) spared it and even wanted to add territory to the Rep.
An offer which was refused by the Governor fearing future repercussions by their neighbouring regions.
During the two great wars it suffered some attacks especially in 1944 , but it remained united and independent

TIL that in Budapest in 1944-45, they used to line up Jews alongside the riverbank of the Danube and shoot them so they would fall into the river and got rid of easily. In 2005, a monument consisting of a series of empty shoes was set up in their memory. [source]

Very moving. Powerful memorial.

I thought so at first but if it's just a taxi part it's really not that different from having a train pass overhead. The important thing is that they don't take-off/land/drive fast on it.

Re: Today I Learned

I just looked up the explanation for something that's been confusing me for a few months (mainly since I started translating EU documents) after I saw a discussion online that reminded me of it.

TIL that for most countries, 1.500 = one thousand, five hundred; and 1,500 = one and a half (with the zeros at the end being extra).

This is probably funny for you guys as, well, most of you seem to live in countries with this system.

Over here, the point . marks the decimal, while the comma , is used to make large numbers easier to read. Since before I starting being exposed to these European documents I read almost solely texts (books/websites) originating in Malta/UK/US/Australia, I had no idea this opposite system exists... Let alone that it is so popular!

In fact, it seems that out of all European countries, only Malta, the UK, and Ireland use the point for the decimal. Even worldwide we are easily in a minority, although maybe not in terms of population (India and China share our system).

I'm curious whether the Internet and American influence has an effect on the way people tend to write these in countries like Germany.
