What Mutu was trying to say was that Lebanese people can understand the Maltese language but the Maltese people cannot understand the Lebanese language.

Yes Maltese is close to Arabic, it's the core of the Maltese language actually. Especially the numbers, I can understand some of the numbers in Arabic.
Example: hamsa - five, sitta - six

wtfffff same thing ... iam checking google trasnlator it's almost same thing !! i think maltese is like syriac very close to arabic ...
too bad i can't listen too maltese on google translate . but after translating some phrase from english to maltese i found like i can understand everything and some words are close to words in latin languages ... like (i'm travelling=jien jivvjaġġaw) in frensh language (travelling=voyager)... so giving the fact that i speak a ltin language (frensh ) fluently and my mother laguage is arabic i can almost understand everything in maltese language :)

To be fair the language is quite similar to Italian too, and many words come from Italian, but as Mackoy said, its roots originate from Arabic.

I sometimes watch football with Arabic commentators and I can understand some of the things they are saying, and people always say that Arabic-speaking people can understand Maltese very well. I guess the main difference between the two languages is the way it is written.

Yes thats because while the core Maltese language is Arabic, it is also influenced a lot by Latin languages; French and Italian and Anglican language; English. Basically our language is a mix of several languages.
But it is a difficult language to learn. I think around 50% of Maltese fail the Maltese O Level exam!

Many Maltese find it hard to use correct spelling and most speak/write Maltese all their lives. Imagine some 20-year old foreigner trying to learn how to write Maltese correctly. It's hard for most. I don't think there's any language quite like it tbh.

aha sorry for being late to reply but i was very busy with my exams ..

but the fact that a lebanese can understand maltese since the lebanese young generation use an unfoccial wrriten language (arabic word in latin letters ) instead of using letters like and 2nd fact that we speak frensh or at least the majority speak frensh so we still can understand some words from from latin origines

anw i'll quote some syntaxes i discovered on google

i'm going home---------Jien ser dar
i'm walking-----------Jien mixi
we are going to the market--------nous allons-suq
we are playing football--------------aħna logħob tal-futbol

None of these translations are correct though. Here are better ones:

i'm travelling=jien qiegħed nivvjaġġa
i'm going home=Jien sejjer id-dar
i'm walking=Jien qiegħed nimxi
we are going to the market=Aħna sejrin is-suq
we are playing football=Aħna qegħdin nilgħabu l-futbol

In October, I'll be traveling to Munich to visit family for three weeks. The last time I was there was in 99', and I was wondering what are some of the major changes that have taken place in the city since then. Also, where are best places to eat, and where is the best beer garten as well? Don't even bother mentioning Octoberfest, I'm landing the day after its over :?
