The Unconventional XI

Postby prasun77 » Sun Feb 07, 2016 3:02 pm

This forum is going through a rough time and opinions are divided and we seem to be disagreeing a lot and being more intolerant..

So I came up with this idea to lighten the mood up a bit and set our grey cells to work also find togetherness by rediscovering our true 1st love that is football..

Whenever we think of football all time XI who comes to mind..Meir,Buffon,Kahn,Muller,Kaiser,Maldini,Ronaldo,Messi,Zidane,Cafu,Pele,Maradonna et al..

What we got to do is form a all time XI without these very common names..now I would give you the liberty to interpret "common" in your own way and let others do so too..but you basically get what I am saying here..The idea is discover forgotten gems the players or who have slipped under the radar with time or the underrated ones..or bring out our personal "favourite" XI instead of "best" XI..

It can be a currently active player too..

I will start..

I'm relatively new to football (2006 world cup), so pardon the fact that my selections will all be from my era. 8)

It feels wrong not to put Lahm, Fußballgot, or Müller on here, but they seem a bit too obvious... Though Alaba is my favorite player, so I'll make an exception. Some are more under appreciated, while some are just my favorites.

I found this very hard and some of these are perhaps conventional for some. There's an obvious bias towards recent players and players from the Italian league which I grew up watching when it was very hard to access Bundesliga games (although I was always a Bayern fan and never a fan of an Italian team).

I can't think of a whole lineup, but I'd have to put Michael Mifsud as my striker if I made one. Extremely underrated Maltese footballer who singlehandedly stopped Man Utd from winning every single competition in the season 2007/08 while at Coventry and also scored 40 international goals in 113 matches for Malta, which is A LOT (because Malta rarely score... 2nd highest top scorer for Malta has 23 goals and 3rd highest has 12).

I'll never understand your fascination with Michael Mifsud. He just left my local club a couple of weeks ago and apart from the last few games he was pretty horrible.

Mikiel il wikkiel...
At least Carmel Busuttil who went to captain Gent in Belgium.
By the way andre Schembri captained his team Omonia Nicosia last wk end. He scored a brace in his team 3-1 win vs the current leaders

From someone in an unconventional best XI playing in a weak league, I'd still expect better. ;)

For someone who is 53rd all time international top scorer anywhere in the world and 20th in Europe (where the competition is tougher), playing for a country that is considered one of the weakest at any time, it's a major achievement. And as you pointed out, he's still active so he has time to score more.

Dutch players were never my favorite. I support the dutch as a team, but most players here are nothing more than a bunch of stuck up wannabe divas.

If any, Van der Sar would be my choice.
