The all-German thread (SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCH BITTE)

Postby quaazi » Mon Sep 03, 2012 1:12 pm

Well, since one of the subjects I need to learn in university is German and I already have a basic understanding of it after 6 years of very, VERY lazy learning, I figure I need some kind of environment to keep my German from deteriorating even further, and what other place better suited than the forum dedicated to a German football team. Basically, let's just talk German here. The German natives are asked to be very bold in pointing out any mistakes I make, while I try to keep up with my faulty grammar, wrong grammatical gender and probably outdated dictionary (google translate is cheating! And not very good at that either). So, let's get on with it.

Haben Sie die Spiel am Sonntag gesehen?

:( I've gotta learn German too. Not able to do it because of too many things on my mind. How long would it take to learn German though?

Ich spreche nicht Deutsch.

But I'm learning it too. I've a paper with most common 300 words in German, that's the start for me. Also I'm listening to the Bundesliga radio on matchdays, when Bayern isn't playing.

German would be a breeze if it weren't for those 4 cases and the damn articles. Der, den, dem, des wtf :( However, aside from that, the grammar is very straightforward and it, along with the vocabulary, is quite similar to English. English is a germanic language after all

Well, let's start the boldness then:

Haben Sie das Spiel am Sonntag gesehen? [very formal. If you're talking to a buddy it's: "Hast Du das Spiel am Sonntag gesehen?" If you meant all of us then it's: "Habt Ihr das Spiel am Sonntag gesehen?"]

If you want to spell out a "thinking sound" like "uh" then in German that would be "äh".

Äh... Du kannst das sagen, ja. Aber mein Deutsch ist viel schlechter als das Englisch, das Element spricht. Zum Beispiel: Ich weiß nicht, was "worse" auf Deutsch heißt. [Capitalize EVERY NOUN in German - in this case "Beispiel"]

[whenever you see me using the letter "ß" then chances are it's because I'm old and I refuse to use the "new way" which more often than not uses "ss" instead. There are a few words in German left that use "ß", but for your purposes going with "ss" always shouldn't be a bad policy.]

I don't speak German (I know a few words as well as a few passe-par-tout sentences, but for the most part, my knowledge of German is pretty rudimentary), but from what I've heard, the conjugation rules are pretty tough too.

There are three main articles in German:

"der" (male)
"die" (female)
"das" (neuter)

Now knowing that it's "das Stadion", "der Ball", "die Ersatzbank" is something you simply have to learn and memorize. All of these words (ball, stadium and the substitution bench) don't have a gender. They are things. Yet in the German language one is male "der Ball", one is female "die Ersatzbank" and one is actually neuter "das Stadion".

It's like that with EVERY noun in German.

Have fun :-D.
