Tennis thread

Postby ottackon » Thu Jul 02, 2015 7:08 pm

I don't know how many of you guys follow tennis, but I'm a big fan and I'd love to share my passion with you :)

Right now, there's a german player who is blowing Nadal off the court at Wimbledon with some sensational serve and volleying and power hitting.

He leads 2 sets to 1.

He was born in Germany to a german mother and a jamaican father, and he plays for Gemany, but yeah, you're right to be proud, he was amazing today.

I share your passion man! The play at the professional level is phenomenal, and the players are imo the classiest athletes, maybe because there is no need for them to sell themselves to the next club. I love football but in tennis it's nice that there isn't the division between fans, cliques arguing about Messi/Ronaldo, Guardiola, etc. Everyone is just a fan of the game.

Gotta ask, you think Nadal will get back to where he was pre-injury? Also, did you see Roger's insane lob against Querrey? Holy cow =D>

I remember we had a brief chat about Wimbledon few months ago ! :)
Well first, let me disagree with you on the absence of cleavage lines in tennis, because this sport has its share of rivalries and debates, among them, the ongoing and eternal question to know who's the GOAT between Federer and Nadal for example.
Personally I do not think I saw someone playing tennis better than Federer, and the shot he produced today is barely among his top 10 if you see what I mean.
As for Nadal, I'm afraid he is no longer a threat in the majors, but I could be wrong, because one should never bury such a champion, even if I won't be too disappointed if he stays away from Federer records

As a former tennis player myself (been to play in some state tournaments here when I was a kid up until I was 17), its a gentleman's sport. These players are respecting each other that the only rivalry that I see is Nick Kyrgios backchatting with the umpires at Wimbledon and McEnroe vs whoever was umpiring back in the 80s. Nadal won't be much of a threat- he'll eventually be like Roddick and retire because of the severity of his injuries. Now that Ivanovic is out, looks like Basti will get to spend a lot more time with her until he arrives back soon. As for Federer- he's still got the power, but none of the players would be much of a test until the quarters as they don't have that powerful forehand that made him so dominant since 2004 (not even Djokovic).

Mehmet Scholl once offered a mixtape CD to Oliver Kahn. Kahn replied: Do you want me to shoot myself? Keep your crap to yourself.

Haha true there is the debate on GOAT, but it is far from Messi/Ronaldo fanboy status ;)

Shame about Rafa. I always thought for someone who was such a clay court specialist and derived so much from the physical aspect of the game that there was no way he could become more than a one or two-shot wonder... Glad to see he had so much more dimension that he had to his game, which is the only reason I think he might come back unlike Roddick. Watched a documentary where the interviewer asked Nadal's uncle if he was a genius for making Nadal a lefty, uncle only responds maybe he screwed Rafa up and Nadal actually could have won a lot more!

Personally just want to see Fed win another major somehow, but I am really happy with the state of tennis. Djoker, Fed, Nadal, even guys like Wawrinka, Murray. That these guys are such winners is already enough, the fact that they have so much respect for each other is just amazing.

Watching women's tennis though is like watching the Bundesliga  Winning the single championship is dismissed and people only start to care if Serena wins at least the treble

Heather Watson is cute, but ultimately that's no substitute for experience on the big stage
Looks like Oxlade-Chamberlain a bit though ;)

Don't fool ourselves, because most people watch the WTA for other reasons than tennis
