It is so wrong to be patriotic ... shhhh

Plus what is wrong to say your country is the greatest...?

Plus it had nothing to do with Nazi era

No... It's wrong to be (a) nationalistic (boon) and many so-called and self-proclaimed patriots do not know the difference...

And it is wrong to say your country is the greatest... What's the use in that shit?
I myself say Germany is the best country in the world... Cause of its infrastructure and social welfare... (Americans, e.g. might disagree) But I'd never say it's "the greatest"... I love my homeland, so yeah, in a way my country... But loving the actual entity of a country is kinda dumb in my book, since it's like loving an imaginary friend... Still, I can kinda understand... Feeling better than others for the simple reason you're being born within man-made, imaginative boundaries, not so much... I'm immensely lucky I was born in Germany... But I'm not better than anybody else for it...

No he doesn't and yes I am

As for the German anthem: the current verse is not just more fitting with our (recent) history, it is also way more beautiful... And the original wasnot calling for defense (as most anthems do) - but it was (MIS-) used to call for attack...

Hi #12 that was only Ramsej's opinion

But I still think you misunderstood my post, there I was only speaking about the music/composition of older versions. The German anthem that I referred to in my post was not 'Das lied der deutschen' (the naughty one with all 3 paragraphs that you refer to and which was used after the one I posted). It only borrowed Josef Haydn's music that was used in the the Austro/Hungarian - Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser one that I posted.

By the way coincidentally today is Josef Haydn's birthday as well !

Nah I got it - I was actually just mocking ramsej

Well, what exactly is the purpose in doing so?

By all means be proud of your society/culture whatever, but to be proud of which rock you were born on doesn't really make sense.

Perhaps it's easier for some nationalities because they have something to be proud of. My country has a shitty history in which we pissed everyone off, no culture except a family who enjoy special status just because of who they are, and a shitty future after pissing close allies off. As I've said before, the only time I feel proud of the country is when the national cricket team is playing. And that is just because it happens to be one of my interests, having grown up playing and watching it with relatives.

I love the landscape and countryside too, but don't see it as a reason to proclaim it "the greatest". Other countries have more stunning natural landscapes and features.

Just for curiosity have you ever met somebody else who shares your opinion on this matter?-
I have an idea that all Brits are super patriots...

The "forgotten 48%" feel this way...

In all seriousness, I don't, and never have known, any "super patriots". Perhaps my family and friends aren't quite as downbeat but they don't go around singing "Rule Britannia" with British flags in the back garden and pictures of the queen in the lounge either. In fact, anyone like that would be marked as a weirdo tbh

You've visited Leeds. Did you really get that impression? Perhaps it feels different for visitors...

I visited Leeds and London...
It was almost ten years ago.
TbH no I did not happen to see such ppl
Although I saw ppl crying depressed kicking parked bicycles and other stuff on the night that your country was kicked off the Euros... by Croatia who were already qualified
2-3...

No I just had that impression that is all...
In my book Italians and French are patriotic as well...
Germans are the anti patriotic...

 Can't believe that game was ten years ago. Bloody hell time flies. I was younger then (as Ed Sheeran would say). Before I turned cynical towards the English football team, and yes I was pretty upset

Being proud or ashamed of your origins is as ludicrous as the emotional investment of that kind when it comes to gender, looks, intelligence, ethnicity, height... you literaly had no choice. :D To love your country for its merits is another matter entirely, whether those are romanticized or rational, but I firmly believe that there is no room for pride on that front.

German's shouldn't be ashamed to sing their entire Anthem. It was written in the 19th century way before the Second World War. To hell with what the rest of the world says or thinks (especially the Brits!)
